— Brother Phil Enlow: That young man, David knew His God!

( congregational amens ).

He didn’t just learn about Him in Sunday School. This was somebody who walked with Him daily, saw Him in action in his life, understood…he understood the reality of God, that God was real! He’d been in situations where he was over his head and God had proven Himself faithful! He knew his God!

More than that, he understood the battle. This was not just a military conflict. This was a spiritual battle. Satan had raised up this champion to defy Jehovah! He knew it wasn’t against him or against the people, it was against God! I’ll tell you, he had the faith and the foresight to be able to say, God, I’m gonna put myself into your hands. That was a pretty good picture here of somebody who knew his God, was strong and able to take action. Praise God!

Of course, you’ve got all kinds of other examples of people, who in great times of evil…I mean, every Sunday school child knows about the three Hebrew children. They were part of the same empire. And all…I mean how would you like to find yourself in a place where they say, bow to my idol or die, be thrown into the fire, and you look around and there’s nobody on your side. Everybody is screaming for your blood. Evil has triumphed and God doesn’t seem to be anywhere around and there you are. But these were people who knew their God. And they said, I don’t know whether…we don’t know whether God is gonna deliver us or not. He can. But I do know one thing…we ain’t bowing to your idol.

( congregational amens ).

You know you got to know something. You’ve got to have reality in here.

( congregational response ).

You look at what happened to Peter, when he tried to depend on his own strength. That didn’t work out too well, did it? All of his good intentions weren’t enough, but I’ll tell you, if we know our God, and we rely upon Him, you’ll find some very ordinary people just like you, just like me, who did extraordinary things. That’s exactly right.

And so, everybody knows the story. Now God did…God actually miraculously delivered them. He used this thing to turn the situation completely around and build up His own name and His own honor. But you know, it doesn’t always work out that way, does it? You read the list of heroes of faith in Hebrews, and many of them did great exploits for God, but sometimes the exploit was dying…was laying down their life and willing to say, I don’t care, I’m gonna pay the ultimate price. I’m gonna serve God if you take my life. It doesn’t matter. That’s how real He is to me, because I know Him!

That’s what God is looking for from a people in this world. I’ll tell you, if our society were to collapse and evil men were to take power, what do you think would happen to the American church? Just disappear, most of it. I thank God for the remnant of people who do know Him.

( congregational amens ).

He’s got His people, but man it would get mighty scarce. People would really have to find out—we’d find out who really knows Him and who really doesn’t. That’s why I just sense that God wants a line drawn in the sand here. You remember Moses did that. I don’t know if he literally drew a line, but he stood there and called to the people and said, who’s on the Lord side, let him come to me. Well, some did. Some others wind up…dying at the point of a sword. It’s a serious business. Praise God!

I’ll tell you, God wants a people who know Him. Of course, knowing Him is not just an event. It begins with an event, doesn’t it? It begins when there is a real surrender and He comes in and bears the witness that, you’re my child. You know that pattern started with His own Son, didn’t it? When Jesus was baptized He said, you are my Son. You’re the Son I love. I forget the exact words but they were…I’ll tell you, that’s exactly what the Lord said in Romans chapter 8. It says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.” (KJV).

You know we need to come back to that. Get rid of this formula, manufacture the Christians kind of stuff and pray that God will send forth His Word by His Spirit and will convert souls to where you can’t talk them out of it. You can’t run them off. You can’t do anything. They know God and you can’t take it away from them, because God put it there.

( congregational amens ).

That’s the only kind of thing that will stand in what is coming upon this earth. But God is faithful. You don’t have to be strong. You don’t have to be smart. You just have to know the God who is all of those things and more.

( congregational amens ).

Because the people who know their God…I like the American Standard on this one. “…People who know their God will be strong and take action”. They’re gonna be strong. I’ll tell you what, I need that kind of strength. I don’t have it in myself. I was thinking about some of the kinds of action. You know, if we come to a time when things really do break down and there’s trouble in the world…I mean, it’s one thing if society just goes on, but I mean if there is really a breakdown of some kind, God is going to use a time like that to reach some people. Yes, there’ll be people who will run like rats off a ship, but you’re gonna have other people that God uses that time to uproot their lives and cause them to feel their need. Someone’s gonna have to have the Word of God. Someone’s gonna have to have reality.

( congregational amens ).

Someone’s gonna be able to have to stand in that time and declare the Word of God and reach out and be instruments that God can use in a time of darkness and evil. Do you believe God has called us to be some of those people?

( congregational amens ).

The focus of our live needs to be knowing God. I started out to say that it’s not an event. It may start that way. But David just didn’t come to a place where he entered into a relationship with God and said, okay I know you. There was more to it than that, wasn’t it? You know, you can meet somebody and be acquainted with them in a sense. You’ve met them. You shake their hands. You had a short conversation. Do you say, well, I know them? But you don’t really, do you?

God is looking for people who are willing on a day by day basis to walk with Him, to pray, to seek Him, to consult Him about every area of life, to learn to trust Him with the circumstances. I’ll tell you, God is going to use the circumstances of life to shape you, to make out of you what He wants. Ben was talking about being conformed to the image of Christ and how what a hopeless thing that is for us. Well, it sure is. The more…the older I get and the more I look in the mirror, the more I realize, God, You’ve got a job on Your hands but You’re able. You’re the only One who can. It’s beyond me.

( congregational amens ).

But God wants us to be the kind of people that look to Him in every circumstance and say, God teach me. Help me to learn the things. Help me not to just be a dumb beast being led, being beaten through…down a chute here. Help me to be the kind of a person who says, God teach me. Help me to understand. Give me your Word. Help me to grow in my understanding of You and of Your ways. Help me to come to know You in the circumstances of life so that when I face something else I’ll have a foundation in my life. I can be like these heroes of old. They weren’t heroes because they were great, they were heroes because they trusted a great God.

( congregational amens ).

We have the same God . He hasn’t changed one bit. We serve a God who can cough and produce a galaxy if He wants to. Of course, He doesn’t need to cough, He just says it.

( laughter ).

But you get the point. He’s a pretty great God. If He can do that, He can take care of the little things in our lives. But oh…you know, what was it that Paul said was the aim of his life? This one thing I do. What was that one thing? “That I may know him…that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.” (KJV).

That doesn’t sound like--that’s not an appealing thing to the flesh. But if you ever see the corruption of the flesh, if you ever see the glory of what He’s called us to, it becomes the thing you want more than any thing else. Oh God. What You did at the cross is the only means of delivering me from me. “O wretched man that I am…” Paul cried, “…Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ….”

( congregational amens ).

We need to get to the place where we can look at the cross and see not just Him there, but us there. We can look at the tomb and say, there I lie. And then we can look at the resurrection day and say, here I come. There’s a new life I can live now because of Him. Praise God! Praise God! What a salvation!

( congregational praise ).

So here’s a time of great evil but there’s a people that God has become real to, and because God has become real to them they’re strong enough to do what God has put before them to do. Praise God! I want to be one of those people. But he goes on. He says, “Those who are wise will instruct many….” (NIV). I sure want to be one of those.

But listen to this, because this is something else we need to reckon on. We need to realize that these kinds of things happen to Christians. Jesus said, they hate me, they’ll hate you. If you side with Jesus, this world will hate you. When the true spirit of this world is manifest, they will hate you. You will not be popular. You will not be accepted by this world. If your aim is to have people like you, you’re in the wrong…you’re headed down the wrong way. I don’t mean that we need to be hateful or anything but loving, and have the Spirit of Christ about us. But I’ll tell you, they hated Him, they’re gonna hate you.

And so here are some of the consequences of that. “Those who are wise will instruct many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered.” So, just because God allows Christians to suffer, just because God allows Christians to fall into deep places of persecutions and they wind up in the grave, some of them, that doesn’t mean that God is not on the job. It doesn’t mean that God doesn’t care.

History is full of people who have gone to the death for their faith as a testimony to the faithfulness of God. And God has promised great reward to those who stand faithful unto death. Paul spoke of the fellowship of His sufferings. Sometimes it means that. It did for Paul. He was executed at the end of his life. Just about everybody that you read about in the New Testament wound up dying for their faith. And there were great testimonies of God’s faithfulness right down to that last moment. Praise God! What a God we have! And so here are these people who God allows this thing to transpire. God allows His people to suffer.

It says, “When they fall, they will receive a little help…” So God is gonna come on the scene here, and sometimes He does, and what happens? “…And many who are not sincere will join them.” Boy, the devil is quick to jump on every opportunity, isn’t he, to try to corrupt God’s people, try to send false professors in among God’s people? I’ll tell you, the Lord knows those who are His. He knows every one of His own.

He is going to…He is the one…well, Ben quoted the Scripture, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” (KJV). We have signed on for One who is able to take us all the way from what we were as lost, undone sinners, and fit us completely to live with a holy God through eternity. Only God can do that. Praise God. It’s an act of divine creation! Something brand new that didn’t exist before! He’s not just renovating this old guy here, He’s replacing him with a brand new model filled with the life of God. Praise God!

( congregational amens ).

Oh, that’s what I need. Praise God! So here’s the situation. He says, “Some of the wise will stumble….” (NIV). You know, I mentioned Peter. What was God’s purpose in allowing Peter to go through that? He wound up helping Peter and helping a lot of other people, didn’t it? You know, sometimes the wisest, most loving thing that God can do for us is to allow us to fall flat on our face.

( congregational amens ).

But that’s never the end of the story with His people. Jesus prayed for Peter. “I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” (KJV). See God had a greater purpose than the devil. The devil wanted to bring him down, the Lord said, I’m gonna let you bring him down, but I’m gonna bring him up. And he’s gonna be better than he was before. He’ll know that he can’t trust himself. He’ll know that he has to put his faith in Me. And he is gonna be able to be a strength, he’ll be able to say, I’ve been there. I know what it is to fail. I know what it is to experience the love and the grace and the forgiveness of God when I thought there was no hope. And the God that saved me will save you. You see God will turn everything around.

But here’s the case. “Some of the wise will stumble…” (NIV). But why? What’s God’s purpose in that? “…So that they may be refined, purified and made spotless….” Everything God does is designed to contribute to the purpose, the ultimate purpose that He has to bring us to that day when He presents us to the Father. He says, Father, here are Your sons and Your daughters. I have finished the job You gave Me to do. They’re completely delivered from every taint of the sin that once imprisoned them. They’ve been made white. They’ve been filled with My glory and they’re ready to live with You forever. And the dwelling of God will be with men. He’ll be our God and we’ll be His people. Oh, Praise God! So no matter what He puts us through to get to that point, God is the one who will bring us through, and He is gonna use every kind of circumstance to do it. And it says, “…Until the time of the end, for it will still come…” When?

( congregational response ).

“…The appointed time.” Do you believe God has a time… has a day on His calendar?

( congregational response ).

We don’t have to worry. It’s not my job to figure out when it is. You know, sometimes we say, oh, its right at the door, its right at the door. I don’t know. I see evil coming. It doesn’t make any difference if He comes tonight or if He comes a hundred years from now in the sense of what we’re supposed to do. Everything in this book was written to people…the New Testament was written to people of the first century. The Lord said be ready. The time is short. We live the same way regardless of where we’re at in history, but I’ll tell you, I believe we are heading down that final lap. We are seeing the things come together. If you pay any attention to what’s going on in the world, you see a spirit working, working, working, maneuvering. We have been brought so far. It’s a different world than many of us grew up in. We’ve said these things before, but I’ll tell you, God’s gonna allow it. But God’s gonna have a people. Do you want to be one of those people?

( congregational response ).

We need to take seriously whether we’re on the Lord’s side or the devil’s. And I’ll tell you while we’re…while we’re going along, God doesn’t want His people sleeping. God wants His people to have the same aim that Paul had in his life, “that I may know him.” Every day, Lord, I want to know You a little better today than I knew yesterday. I want to know more about You and Your ways. I want to experience You in my life in such a way that I have confidence, a greater confidence tomorrow, that I can speak a word of comfort and strength to somebody else. Lord, I want to be one that knows you so that I’m not thrown when something comes. When I see evil triumph, I don’t say, oh my God, I guess I was wrong. You know, we don’t want this second-hand faith. You’d better know Him yourself. He wants you to know Him.

( congregational amens ).

But the price is your life, bowing at the feet of His Son and saying, Lord, remake me into Your image. My life is Yours. Nothing short of this qualifies as real Biblical Christianity. I don’t care what they say out there. They can preach all these other gospels they want to. This is the truth! I’ll tell you God is…God is gonna allow many things. I hope you’re not one that he can corrupt, because deep down you really haven’t ever given yourself to Him. But I guarantee, if that’s the case, you’ll fall. You will go your way. Evil will conquer you, because our only defense is to be given to Him. We’re either going to be a 100 percent on the Lord’s side or we’re gonna be a 100 percent on the devil’s side before it’s over.

But we serve Somebody who has promised never to leave us, never to forsake us. Whether he calls upon us to stand and rain down…you know, call down thunderbolts or whether He call us to lay down our lives for the Lord, He will be with us until that last moment. And we will stand with Him on the other side. Praise God! Praise God!

I’ll come back to this. People will go out of this meeting, they will go in one direction or the other. If you’re not to that place where you know Him, I hope that you realize, like that merchant, the value of this pearl. I hope it becomes so…something you want so much, that you will seek Him until God makes it real in your life. You will know it and so will everybody around you. You will be a different person.

( congregational amens ).

But, if you allow the devil to steal this Word and let you slide right back to what you were, that’s not a good thing. I warn you before God. But I want to encourage God’s people, everyone who knows Him we’re gonna be among those who are strong. We’re not gonna have strength of our own. It’s not gonna be our wisdom. It’s not gonna be our knowledge. It’s gonna be our God. We have the same God who enabled David to slay Goliath. We have the same God who enabled the three Hebrew children to stand up to the emperor. We have the same God who saved Daniel from the lions. We have the same God who enabled Isaiah to be sawn in half for his faith, for his faithfulness. We have the same God who brought His Son safely through the cross, the tomb and then emptied that tomb and gave us victory forever. Praise God! Praise God!
