-- Brother Phil Enlow: He knows exactly how you tick. He knows how to fix what’s broken. He knows how we’re supposed to be according to His original design. There’s no other way that you and I can ever enter in to what God has intended for us except just to surrender to His hand and say, oh God, I give you my heart. I give you my life…exactly what we just sang a little while ago. May God give us that grace and He certainly is more than willing. Because He knows…we can’t even do that without His help. That’s the shape we’re in. We need God!

( congregational amens ).

I need God to come and help me even to believe and to surrender!

( congregational amens ).

You can say, oh God, I surrender, I surrender. I need His help to do that. I can say the words. How many of you know what I’m talking about?

( congregational amens ).

Yeah. You’ve been there, done that. Oh is God faithful?

( congregational response ).

Yes. And the things, the issues that still remain in our lives, God hasn’t forgotten about them! They’re not beyond His power just like stuff that we’ve experienced in the past. God is gonna carry us all the way. I’m so glad that He’s like this. This is not a threat to me. This is a joy, just like it was to David.

“You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (NIV). But here’s David realizing you didn’t wait ‘til I got here in the sense of being born. You were involved back then. You’re the one who put me together. “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” He sees the goodness of God even in his own being, even just allowing him to come, watching over his life, looking over the processes that got him there. He sees the hand of God in all of that.

Do you think that you’re just some sort of accident and God doesn’t care about you? God cares about you. I don’t care who you are, where you’ve been, what you’ve done. God cares about you! And what David is saying about himself, he’s saying God wants you to know that this applies to you!

My frame…well, let’s back up here. “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; you works are wonderful…” awesome, “…I know that full well.” That’s a good thing to know. I tell you, if we understand that, we can face life with a different spirit, a different faith. We’re in God’s hands. He’s bringing us safely through. He formed us in the beginning. He’s doing what’s needed in us now to get us ready for what He’s planned. Man, this is a joyous, awesome thing.

“My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.” Just think about some of the things. He’s talking about the depths of the earth here now. You think about what he’s saying there. You and I are made up of all kinds of physical materials, aren’t we? Well, I won’t list them all, but anyway…carbon, I guess, is one of the biggest things. All these elements that make up our physical bodies in this world, they came from somewhere.

Now you think about something like this. Let’s think of a mother who buys produce that was grown in California, okay. And she’s taking…she’s got a child that’s on the way and she eats this produce, and in that produce there’s nourishment, there’s minerals, there’s nutrients that enter not only into her but into the child, and play a part in making that baby what that baby is going to be. Well, where did that come from? Well, that came from California. That’s a scary thought.

( laughter ).

No. Anybody from California that hears this, we love you.

( laughter ).

But no…out in the central valley of California you’ve got all this amazing farm land. But where did the nutrients come that fed the plants that grew there? A lot of times they might have come from a mountain stream up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. And so there were minerals up there, and the Lord said, Carl’s going to need this one day. I better wash this down. I’m going to send just the right rain to wash this down into the valley in a certain place. And it’s gonna go into a certain field, and this lettuce or whatever it is, is gonna grow there, and it’s going to drink up these nutrients, and they’re gonna go, and Carl’s mother is gonna eat this, and those nutrients that were once up in the mountains…you see where this is going? You think about a God who can keep track of you when you were everywhere, before you and I even arrived. This is amazing! This is a wonderful, awesome God! You want to contend with Him? Good luck.

“…Your eyes saw my unformed body.” Now listen at what he says here, “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Now that almost sounds like determinism or fatalism or whatever it is. God’s got it all figured out. I don’t have to do anything. He’s not doing away with human responsibility. But I’ll tell you, there’s a God who saw you and He had the story of your life written.

I pray that He didn’t have to foresee bad detours that I could have avoided and write them in His book. But you know even where we mess up like David did, messed up real bad, God had that written in His book. David’s going to mess up, but I’m going to send a prophet to him, and I know what he’s gonna do. He’s gonna repent. He’s going to write the greatest Psalm of repentance that’s ever been written, and it’s gonna help my people down through the ages when they fall into the mud and they mess up. God just turned that whole situation around. He had that written in a book before that ever happened. You think that’s just kings and important people in the Bible like David? That’s you, and that’s me!

( congregational amens ).

God is so great that He knows everything. He’s got the story of your life written before it ever happens. I tell you, I want to cooperate. I want to know something about Him. I want to rest in His plan, and just realize the purpose of my life is fulfilled just in knowing Him and becoming more like Him. “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

Then he says, “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!” And there’s a marginal reading that says how precious concerning me. I think that’s kind of what he’s trying to get at. “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” Now he’s not just talking about some generic…oh God, you’re pretty smart. I’m just blown away with all the stuff you know. This is not that kind of a thing. This is…David is realizing the amount of thoughts that this great God has had concerning him. Do you get the difference?

I mean, Steve, God thought about you, God thinks about you every moment of every day. He’s concerned. He understands, J.P., everything about you. You are on God’s mind. You are on God’s heart. David realized this is not just…God’s not just some automatic, cosmic machine that just sort of knows everything. This is a God who is personal, who’s interested, who thinks about stuff. And what is He thinking about? He’s thinking about you, and you, and you, and you, and me.

( congregational amens ).

He’s thinking about us. I wonder how much we think about Him. You are in God’s thoughts today, and He’s thinking about what’s going on in your life, where you’re headed, the challenges you face. He’s thinking about that. He’s aware. He’s concerned. He’s planning. His hand is…He’s involved! He’s not like us where we do stuff sort of on auto pilot. You get behind the wheel and you drive someplace you’re familiar with, and you get there and…how did I get here? God is never on auto pilot. He who knows the hairs on your head, He thinks about you today, tomorrow, next week. You’re on His heart, and you’re on His mind, and He cares about you.

You think He can’t lead you? You think He can’t help you with the issues of life? You think He’s just gone off somewhere just because you don’t feel all of this, just because the devil tells you all kinds of negative, contrary stuff? You think God’s not involved? I’ll tell you, God thinks about you. And David is just…oh how precious, how amazing! If you’re focused on all the bad stuff and you’re afraid for anybody to know… that is a disquieting thought. But here’s David saying, You know everything about me. You’re thinking about me. Oh God, that’s awesome, it’s wonderful! How precious is that! Lord, that’s worth more than all the riches of this world that You think about me!

I was trying to remember a song that I heard sung a lot in the Philippines. I can’t remember it all, but, “Who am I that you are thinking of me?” You know the song, I guess. “I Am A Friend Of God.” That’s what it is. “I Am A Friend Of God.” “Who am I that you are thinking of me?” And he said, “I am a friend of God, I am a friend of God.” What an awesome thing that God wants to do for every one of us, to live in the awareness of what David is talking about here. Praise God!

So he goes on talking about God’s thoughts. “Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.” Now David was just thinking about the biggest number he can think of, the biggest analogy he can make. That’s a lot of thoughts. You start counting the grains of sand on the seashore and David’s saying that’s the number of your thoughts toward me. That’s a pretty big God. What a mind! He’s just Somebody so much greater than we are that we just can’t even…it’s hard to even describe these things. David’s trying, but this is an amazing God!

“Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.” Next time you’re at the beach, look at the sand and say, God, all this represents your thoughts about me? Wow! God, help me to serve You and to love You, and to appreciate. Help me to have the same attitude toward that thought that David did. Oh man, I’m so glad. Oh God, I’m so glad that you’re thinking about me because I need someone. I need someone who cares about me, to be thinking about me, and to watch over me.

And then he says, “When I awake, I am still with you.” You know there’s people that are afraid to go to sleep because they’re afraid of what’s gonna happen? They’re afraid to let go of their consciousness. Oh what a wonderful thing it is to be able to just relax in the Lord and know that He’s right there. I can rest because I’m in His presence. And I don’t have to worry about when I wake up. God, where did you go? He’s right there. David’s just saying it doesn’t matter if I’m awake or asleep or where I’m at. He’s here. He’s there. He’s involved. He is my God.

So now he goes off into another subject here. It sounds a little hard for us to relate to in a way, but you think of the world David lived in, because there were heathen nations, there were wicked men that just did unspeakable things, and they were enemies of God. They were forever fighting against Israel, the people of God. And so David says this, “If only you would slay the wicked, O God!”

But you know something? I’ve said this before. There’s no way God could be ultimately, supremely good, and not hate what is evil. God absolutely abhors that which is evil. I thank God He loves and reaches out to sinners, but God hates what is evil. And I’ll tell you, when this world is over…Lord, You can come today if that’s Your plan, if this is what Your plan is, come, Lord. Get us out of this place. Lord, we just want to go forward. I’m thankful. I don’t believe it’s quite that day, but man, it’s drawing nearer, isn’t it?

But you’ve got to realize, the flip side of that is what’s going to happen to this world. It is destined for the fire. Just think about what God knows. We talk about what He knows about His people, but just think of the awareness that He has of the sin and the wickedness of this world. There’s enough that makes it into the news to just turn your stomach and to realize how such evil could be…and so much that goes on that you would never know about. And yet God is completely, completely aware of it. I tell you, that tells me that God has a tremendous patience, that He is so committed to His kingdom and to what He is doing in you and me, that He’s willing to put up with that in order to do this.

Oh I’ll tell you, there’s a part of Him that I know wants to rise up and just smash the…I mean, don’t you feel that way sometimes? You read some of the stuff, and you just want to ring somebody’s neck. How could they possibly do…sentence them to life in front of a firing squad or something? “If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men! They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.” A lot of religion does that. “Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord, and abhor those who rise up against you? I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.”

Well, I don’t think what the Lord is trying to communicate to us is that we need to have a spirit of malice toward people that don’t follow God. That’s not it at all. We know that from the life of Jesus. But I’ll tell you, there is an uncompromising spirit in David to say, God, I am on Your side. I stand with You and on the ground of righteousness. I don’t want to have anything to do with the wickedness and the sin of this world. This is not a holier-than-thou thing. This is saying, oh God, I know that to have a right relationship to You I can’t have anything to do with that kind of stuff.

God give us that kind of uncompromising sprit toward what is evil and what is wrong. Do we expect to have the blessing of a holy God and to just sort of have a toying attitude with things that we know He hates? No. And of course, I’m so glad that there is the Spirit of Jesus.

Well, let me go on and read the part that we know so well. In the light of all of this David’s reaction is, oh God, I hope I can get through this life without making Him mad. I just want to sort of stay on His right side. I know He knows everything…so you’re walking on eggs trying to not make God mad…. You ever think that way, or see people that do?

God wants us to have a spirit of freedom but still listen to David’s heart. The One who knows…You’ve searched me, You know everything there is to know about everything. Oh God, search me. This is the key to so much in our lives, is to have a spirit that says, God, You know everything anyway. But God, I don’t want to hide. I don’t want to pretend. I don’t want to just feel like in order to be okay, I’ve got to bury all this stuff that I don’t want put up there. God, if there’s something in me that needs Your attention, that needs my attention, oh God, I want You to bring it out. I want You to dig it out. God, I don’t want to just leave it buried there. I want to get rid of it. Lord, You know everything. The God who knows everything, search me, Lord.

“…Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Praise God! Do you know there’s an everlasting way, and there’s a way that leads to death? You know what man thinks? There’s a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, but there is a way everlasting…I’ll tell you, to put ourselves in God’s hands.

But by nature we shrink from this. We could sing the songs and search me oh, God, know my thoughts. And I think in a sense we’re sincere, but…there’s a part of us that’s saying I don’t know about that. I’m a little afraid. Somehow David knew not to be afraid. But you know, Jesus came, didn’t He, and gave us a real honest picture of the One David was talking about here? The people that had the most trouble with Jesus, that He had the most trouble with were the religious folks…I’m okay, ain’t nothing wrong with me. Don’t You mess with me.

But what about the ones who had so much in their life, so much reason to be filled with shame, so much reason to filled with guilt? How did Jesus treat them? When the sin of that woman was out there for all the crowd to see, taken in the act of adultery, just completely humiliated before everybody, what was His Spirit towards her? That’s the same Spirit God has toward the secret things in our lives that He wants to deal with and wants to help us with. It’s not a disgust, it’s not any of the things that the devil would tell us that it is. It’s almost like we’re afraid if all the stuff that’s in there comes out, oh God, You’re gonna be so disgusted with me, You’re just going to give up. You don’t think God knows about all that, and loves you anyway, and sent Jesus anyway to give hope, to give us a place we can go to be clean and to be set free? Praise God!

( congregational amens ).

Praise God! And the light of the spirit of Jesus shown so many occasions when He showed such compassion to people who were the lowest of the low, had all the reason of the world to feel hopeless and dirty and ashamed. And He didn’t treat them that way. He treated them with kindness and love. He said go, and sin no more.

Catch the spirit of what David is saying here. God has made Himself known to this man in a very unique way. I doubt there’s very many people in the history of the world who’ve just known God like this, just had such a sense of His heart, not just His stuff, not just His book, and His truths, and His principles, but I mean to get close to the heart of God so that you really know what He’s like and what He’s about.

And in the light of all of that, he says, oh God, search me. God, I’m not holding anything back. God, I know there’s stuff there that can’t be what you want. But please come, please come, please show me. Of course, if you start praying that, He will. You’re gonna find a lot of stuff you didn’t know was there.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but there was a missionary. Her name escapes me right now. Somebody will tell me afterwards. But anyway, there was a young woman who was converted from, actually a life of atheism and a party girl about 100 years ago now. And God really saved her, and God called her to be a missionary in China. And she had occasion…is it Isobel Kuhn? I think so. Anyway, she had occasion to travel. In those days you didn’t get on a plane and get there in a few hours and have jet lag. You got on a boat, and it took weeks.

And so, she traveled with a party of missionaries, and there happened to be a senior, experienced lady missionary who was returning to China. And so they had a lot of time of fellowship and…what can I expect kind of thing. And one thing that she notes in her book about her life as a missionary in China is what that lady said. The scum of your heart will come out when you get there. Her reaction was, what do you mean? What are you talking about? Here I’ve given up my life, I’m going to be a missionary in China, and you’re talking about the scum of my heart is gonna come out?

And she just had to be there a little while, and sure enough. She discovered so many things, when native women would come in and not seem to care about all her nice things. Don’t move my furniture. Don’t mess my…you know, just all these things that she found her heart was attached to, and the feelings that would whelm up in her, and we’re all that way. We are so attached in a self-centered way to things that have no eternal value. And all God has to do is push the right button, and you’re gonna find out some pretty ugly stuff’s gonna come out.

But you know, God doesn’t despise you. He’s not bringing that out to rub your nose in it and make you feel ugly and rejected. He’s pulling it out to say, give it to me. Just give me your heart. I can fix that. I can take care of that. We were talking about revival. This is a key. Revival is not just some thing that gets dumped on us. This is individual people coming into a relationship with a holy God…that’s something deeper than they’ve known.

Every real revival in history has been marked by a spirit of repentance, of conviction. But I am so glad that God knows how to convict without humiliating, and grinding us into the ground. But oh, where there are a people who are willing to face what they are and just come to Him, humbling themselves in His hands and saying Lord, take my heart, fill me, change me. That’s where God’s presence comes and dwells.

And notice what David’s focus is here. He’s talking about his relationship with God, but he doesn’t say search so-and-so. I’m very annoyed with the way they’ve been lately. I don’t like the circumstance. I don’t like the situation. I don’t agree with this. I don’t agree with that. God, fix it. David’s focus…and he certainly has plenty around him, didn’t he? But David’s focus was search me. You know, there’s not one us that can control everything around us, fix it. But there’s one thing we can do. We can come to God and say, God, fix me. That’s the need.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” I just say this morning, I see that as a need in me. And I’ll tell you, if we are willing to come to God this way, I believe there’s gonna be more and more power, and more and more faith in our praying for others. And there’s gonna be a different spirit maybe, than there sometimes is in our praying about others. There’s gonna be less of a spirit of what’s wrong with them, why don’t they get it? Oh God, they’re caught by a power they don’t understand. They need Your help. God, just like I need Your help, they need Your help. Oh God, be merciful to them as You’ve been merciful to me. There’s a different spirit. I’ll tell you, we’re gonna see God answer prayer in a greater and greater way in our lives if we come to Him like this. Do you believe that?

( congregational response ).

Is this just a nice little talk, or is this Truth? I believe it is. God, give us the grace. Take away our fear. I’ll guarantee this place, if we were to confess it, is full of people who are afraid to do what we sing in a song, “Let Go and Let God Have His Wonderful Way.” We know it’s true, but somehow we just…God, help us. I’ll tell you, we have a God who’s wonderful. The more we know about Him, the more we want to be near Him, not to run from Him. He wants you to know Him that way, and to love Him the way David expresses here. I believe as we let Him have our hearts, He’s gonna change us, and we’re going to see the difference in our lives, and we’re gonna see the difference in the church. Praise God!
