Transcript of message from TV Broadcast 1228 -- taken from Closed Captioning Text

— Brother Phil Enlow: Praise God! It’s sure good to see everybody this morning! My mind continues to be flooded with thoughts that I believe the Lord wants to help me with, and to help every one of us with, and it’s still, along with that same theme, about peace with God. And, many will remember that a couple of Wednesdays ago, when my brain was about half-fried, the Lord gave me kind of a quickie little look at a verse, a familiar scripture in Isaiah 26, and then it began to…kind of gave me a little bit of an outline of some of the ways to unpack that truth.

And, the scripture itself is Isaiah 26:3-4, where it says, “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.” (NIV). And the basic, simple outline was, our will not His. I’m sorry. Let’s switch that around.

( laughter ).

His will, not mine.

( laughing ).

His Word, not mine. And His work, not mine. And you remember last week, we sort of tried to share a little bit about the subject of His will, and how human nature, by its nature, is at war with God, which is the opposite of peace. And the fact that wickedness is not simply defined as certain rules that we break and that sort of thing.

It’s design, basically…or it is a word that conveys, simply, the thought that I am at variance with Him. I am at war with Him. He is this and I am that, and I…there’s this gulf and this conflict. And that spirit of independence is described as being wicked! And it manifests itself in things that we term to be wicked.

But, the truth of the matter is, the most religious person in the world, whose will is still set against God and is still full of self-will, is a very wicked person, in God’s eyes. So anyway, if we’re going to have…I mean, the thought that I came away from that Wednesday service with, and I did not express it then, was simply this. If we are not at peace, if we’re not experiencing this peace that we’ve been given, the reason is locked up in these areas that we’ve talked about. Either my will’s not aligned with His, or I’m not thinking like He is, or I’m not letting Him do the work.

And so, that naturally brings us this week to the simple subject of, God’s Word, not ours. Because we live, as I said that Wednesday, we live in a world that is often described, at least on the intellectual side, as being post-modern. And by that, they mean that truth is not considered to be an absolute anymore. There’s no such thing, in the minds of many people today, most people, I would say…there’s no such thing as absolute truth, something that is true, all the time, everywhere, for everybody.

And we are left, as human beings, to chart our own course, to determine what is true for us and for me. And, I have my truth, you have yours. And what a clever scheme it is of Satan to absolutely take us, remove us from what is real and fill it with something that is absolutely a lie!

You know, one of the things Jesus prayed…as I was looking at some of this, it just…material just fell out of everywhere. So, I’m just praying the Lord will help me to focus on what He wants, the emphasis He wants. But Jesus prayed for His disciples in John 17, right before He went to the Cross. And He prayed in their hearing.

One of the things that He prayed was in verse17. “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” Now, He had also said, I am the way! I am the truth! I mean, there is an absolute! There are things that are absolutely true, absolutely real! And if we are ever going to come into a right relationship with God and experience real peace on the inside, that truth is going to have to really be the governing force in our lives. We’re gonna have to come into total alignment with God, with His truth, with His Lordship, with everything about His purpose as to why we’re even here in the first place!

We live in a world that has absolutely, like I say, lost that sense. Do you remember when Jesus came before Pilot? And Pilot asked Him, are you the King of the Jews? And He said, yes I am. I came to “…bear witness unto the truth.” (KJV). Do you remember what Pilot’s answer was?

( congregational response ).

“What is truth?” It’s like, this is a foreign concept. What is truth? And the question…you have to go back to the beginning to see how we got here. And I think we know this, but I think it’s important. There’s a certain thing that I want to bring out.

If I had…I was thinking about this and I was going to say this later, in what I had in mind, but I think this is the place for it. I think an awesome title for a service sometime, not necessarily this one, would be “Satan’s Holodeck.” Now for some of you, that will be absolutely meaningless. But some of you remember Star Trek and the various Star Trek series. And, if you ever watched any of those, you will remember that one of the technological wonders that they had was called the holodeck.

And, we have…the scientists today can bring out holograms. And by that, they mean light projected 3D images. But the technology that they portrayed, on that series, was the ability of the computer to materialize artificial scenes and situations and environments, and bring to life real characters that they could touch and talk and interact with, but they were entirely constructed out of thin air. I mean, they weren’t real. They just seemed to be real.

So, you could take a vacation in the tropics, if you wanted to. You’d just tell the computer to run the right program, you walk into this empty room and the next thing you know, you’re at the beach somewhere. So, it’s an entirely artificial environment.

And you know, even in our world today you have this business of…I’m trying to think of what they call it, but…virtual reality, I guess, is the term. And that’s where computers create an environment and they feed that environment into your senses. You might wear goggles. And again, you might be in the middle of New York City and if your senses are isolated enough or the program is good enough, you can be in the tropics, too! As far as you’re concerned, what you’re seeing and feeling is real.

And this is what Satan has done to the human race. This is a pretty good picture. We are living in this world—people are living in Satan’s holodeck. And I just pray the Lord will help us to unpack that.

But I want to go back to Genesis chapter 3, so we can understand what I’m getting at. Genesis chapter 3. And this is, of course, where we find the account of the original fall, the original sin.

And another word for what we think of as real, how we see the world, is called our worldview. Everybody has one. Everybody sees the world through a certain lens, a certain filter. We understand what the world is about, what is my place in it, and it encompasses every aspect of life. How do I understand myself and what’s going on around me in this world?

And you think about the worldview of Adam and Eve before the fall. And what was it? I mean, how did they see God? They saw Him as a benevolent, awesome, incredible Being with whom they had perfect, unbroken fellowship. They saw Him as one who provided for every need that they could possibly conceive of. It was an entirely good thing. Obviously, they sensed in that, He loves me, He’s providing for us.

And it wasn’t just a play. It was that God has given us an awesome place of responsibility and ability to meet that responsibility. He’s created this immense, beautiful creation and He’s put us in charge. And so, it’s not just…I mean, there’s a meaning to everything. Their whole world…that was their worldview. That’s how they saw life.

And Satan comes along and he tempts Eve, and he begins to reason with her. And so, he asks at the beginning, it says, “Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden?” (NIV). And the woman rehearses what God had said. “…We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.”

So now, all of a sudden, we see Eve’s worldview being directly challenged with a different one. You see what’s going on there? “You will not surely die…” — So now suddenly, there’s a contrary idea that’s come into play — “…The serpent said to the woman. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God…” or like gods, in the original, “…knowing good and evil.”

So now, he’s challenging, not only the facts of what God said, but he’s going right back to the motive. He’s impugning God’s goodness, God’s motivation for telling them what He told them. And all of a sudden, there’s something that begins to change in her thinking and her way of seeing the world. It’s like, I didn’t get that, didn’t understand. I thought it was this way when it’s really this way.

This God that’s been telling me this, I don’t know if I can trust Him anymore. He’s telling me something but He has an ulterior motive in what He’s telling me. And so, everything’s in question. I’ve got to see this world in a different sense. I’ve got to be able to determine for myself what is good, what is right, what’s good for me. And by the way, that fruit looks mighty good. You know, I hadn’t really looked at it before because I knew it was off limits, but you know, now that I look at it, that really looks very tasty. And the idea of my being able to acquire from that, the ability to chart my own course, be my own god, hey, that sounds pretty good to me!

And so, do you see a total worldview flip going on in her mind? She saw the world through a certain lens. You know, what Satan has done, not only in that area, but in many areas, he has absolutely fitted the human race with glasses that have turned a lie into the truth. He’s created, in hearts and in minds, a way of looking at life, at God, if they even believe in God. What am I about? What is important? What is of value? What is right? What is wrong? It answers every one of those questions, even though you see all the incredible variety of ideas, the central thing is that, I am my own God, life is about me, and here is the wisdom, here’s the way I look at the world as to how I’m to conduct my life and what its meaning is.

And somehow that’s…I can’t get away from some of these ideas. This is really the root of so much that affects you and me today! ‘Cause this is the world we’re born into. But you see how this progressed. God continued to strive with men and there were a handful of people, over the centuries that followed, who listened to God’s voice, who actually knew Him, who honored Him, and who walked with Him. Enoch was a prime example of somebody who just walked with God.

But you come down to Noah’s day, and what happened? God said, “…every imagination of the…heart was only evil continually.” (KJV). I’m not gonna strive with men anymore. So, you can see from that picture, God has been seeking to influence men. He’s been challenging this new, rebellious worldview that they had embraced. But they were so in love with their sins and their lusts that they chose to embrace Satan’s holodeck.

This is more…this is for me! I still don’t have this trust of God. I don’t trust Him! He’s got an ulterior motive here! He does not have my best interest at heart! He’s doing…I know what selfishness is. You see what happened? We become selfish and we project our selfishness onto God. And so, we accuse Him, by our actions and our thoughts and our deeds, of being like us and being untrustworthy, and being selfish, when He is the polar opposite of everything that’s wrong with the human race!

Oh my! God’s got a big job to save! There’s nothing we can do. We are dependent on Him! But here, the entire human race had reached a point where all God could do was just take His hands off. He’s not gonna absolutely force people to choose what He wants them to choose. So anyway, we know that there was that destruction and then we came out of that, and that’s been the trend of the human race.

You see down at the end, do you remember what happens in 2nd Thessalonians 2? There’s a rebellion, toward the end of time—toward the end of the age. And have we not seen this?

( congregational response ).

Yeah! We’re watching the unfolding of this final rebellion against God. And it’s responsible for what’s being taught in our universities, what we’re seeing on television, what we’re seeing everywhere…Hollywood, you name it. It is man in final rebellion against God! We reject your rule over us! We will not have the Son of God to rule over us!

And here we go. We’re coming down, and we’re seeing more and more the fulfillment of what Paul said was coming…that God is going to give them over. God is going to send…in fact he says send, what?

( congregational response ).

“…Strong delusion….” And boy I’ll tell you, we need to see that. We need to understand the absolute delusion that this world is in. And you know, what Paul said, in 2nd Corinthians chapter 4, is absolutely true! I’ll go ahead and read that. These are all familiar scriptures. I just want us to see them with a little different emphasis and slant this morning, ‘cause there’s a lot more depth to this than I think we have seen.

Because Paul…he saw his ministry as giving out words that God enabled him to give. He recognized he didn’t have the ability to do this. None of us does, by the way. But his job was to give out the message, to give it out plainly, to appeal to men’s consciences, and to depend on God to do the work. Sounds like a pretty good formula, to me! We cannot manufacture Christians with our religious formulas. It just doesn’t work. But anyway, Paul was…that was his ministry.

And he says, in verse 3, “And even if our gospel is veiled…” (NIV). That is, somebody is blind to it, they can’t see it. “…It is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

That’s it. There is a reality! There is absolute truth, but Satan has absolutely blocked the ability of people to see it. You remember how Jesus talked to Nicodemus and said, unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God. It’s just not real. I’ll tell you what, the carnal mind is, what?

( congregational response ).

It’s, “…enmity against God.” That’s the King James language. But, “The sinful mind is hostile….” is the NIV translation of that. The sinful mind…this is the mind of one who lives in Satan’s holodeck, is hostile, the enemy of God! Everything about the way I think, as a natural man, is utterly opposed to God, His will, His purpose, everything about Him! God, just go away! Leave me alone! I’m my own God! I know what’s right! I know what’s wrong! I’m gonna live the way I want to live! It’s my life!

That is the spirit that rules this world! And I’ll tell you, the thing about…the thing that is amazing, when you think about it, is that many times, people’s worldview will embody things that are factually true. That is, I ought to get along with people. I ought to treat people right.

And sometimes it’s really religious! I mean, you have people who have never been born of the Spirit of God, churches are filled with them in our day, but I’ll tell you, they’re there, they’re giving acknowledgment to things that are true, and what they’re doing is integrating ideas into their worldview, and they’re good principles, but they have never, ever had their eyes truly open to see themselves as they are. And so they become religious and it absolutely feeds their own sense, hey, I’m a good person, God likes me, I’m not like them!

Do you remember the Pharisee? That was exactly the condition he was in. He was convinced his little, artificial reality that he was seeing his own life and seeing the world through, in that reality he was a good person. I thank you God, “…I am not as other men.” (KJV). Well, how could he be a lost man and be in that condition? It’s because Satan has allowed him to involve certain good principles into his thinking, because he knew this man is a man of conscience. He’s gonna be concerned about these things. And so, I’ve got to allow him to feel a sense of self-righteousness.

But you know what’s going on with all of that? Self never, ever lets go. Self will not die! And you know, one scripture that really sets forth the difference…back in 1st Corinthians chapter 1, that really highlights the difference between human reasoning and God’s truth, is the Gospel.

Verse 18, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate. Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.” (NIV).

You see, you’ve got these two utterly competing worldviews. Some of it, on one side, may be religious, but it’s absolutely opposed to the will of God. Do you know what the real bottom line issue is? The message of the cross is that in order for us to be rescued, we’re gonna have to die!

( congregational amens ).

That does not compute in Satan’s holodeck. I can be religious. I can do all these good things. But die? That doesn’t make a bit of sense to me! To actually come to fulfill the purpose for which I was created, to be rescued from this condition…what condition? I’m fine! Yeah, I’ve got a few problems! Maybe I need this, I need that, I need the other, but I’m still, basically…this is my life, I’m gonna live it. This is the condition that people are in.

And so, the message of the cross…it says, in order for you to live eternally, you’re gonna have to give up your life. You’re gonna have to lay it down and allow Me to give you a new life and change you. That’s total lunacy! I’ll tell you what, that’s a desperate condition this human race is in! Blind, ensnared, totally under the control of their natural, earthly desires. Lost in a world that does not exist! It is unreal!

And yet, it seems completely real to the people of this world. You can talk to them and if God’s not dealing with the heart, you can talk till you’re blue in the face. They’ve got those glasses on. What do you mean, the world’s not blue? Of course it is! Look at it! Everywhere you look, it’s blue! They don’t understand the glasses. They don’t understand the condition that they’re in. Boy, we need God, don’t we?

( congregational response ).

Praise God! Do you remember what God said to the Israelites? He said, “All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people…” That’s stubborn! They’re not gonna let go! “…Who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations.” But it’s real! I see it! It’s there! What do you mean, it’s not real? And God’s just trying to penetrate and say, you are living in a lie, you’re living in an illusion. And I want to rescue you out of it!
