— Brother Phil Enlow: Welcome to America, folks! This is where we’re at. I see that in the condition of the country where there is a blindness that can only be accounted for with God taking His hands off of people. There’s a blindness that is causing us to go down a certain track and this is true of the whole world.

But I’ll tell you, we have a God who is in charge, who is already…I mean, it’s not like this is a contest between God and the devil and we don’t know who’s gonna win. There’s no contest. This is a God who has a purpose that He has foreseen from all eternity. And in the midst of this darkness, he is absolutely doing something that will amaze us before it’s done, because, he is going to bring a people out of this! He is going to bring a people through this, a people who will one day stand with Him in a Kingdom that will last forever, and we’ll do it because He has shown mercy upon us! Praise God! I’m so thankful for the reality of what He has purposed to do.

You know, it’s hard to find a better place to go than Romans 8. Let’s just go there for a moment. You know, last week we talked about Paul’s attempt in Romans 7 to serve God by keeping rules and laws and found out that didn’t work, because of what was in him. But then, he realized, then God showed him the reality of the fact that it was Christ in him, it was the new life in him that enabled him to live for God. And so, that’s where he goes with that.

And so now we see the purpose of that unfolding. Let’s see, where do we want to pick it up? He talks about we have not received, verse 15, “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear.” (NIV). That’s a good thing to remember. How many of you look at the world and you kind of get afraid sometimes? I’ll tell you, there’s a lot of things, if you’re gonna factor God out of the equation, or harbor doubts about His power and faithfulness, there’s plenty of ammunition out there. You look at the world, you look at what’s going on, you feel helpless to change its course, and we are.

And then you turn around and you look in the mirror, and you realize it’s not just out there, but it’s in here. There’s a battle that you fight every single day. You say, oh my God, is there any hope? How could God love somebody like me? That’s the miracle. He doesn’t base his love for us on our loveableness, but upon His purpose and His power. Praise God! Praise God!

So He didn’t give us that spirit of a slave and the fearfulness that comes from my trying to measure up in order to deserve it. It’s not like that. “…But you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, Abba….” Papa…it was a very intimate term for a father. To think that we could literally…it’s not a casual, careless kind of a low-down kind of thing. How do I put it? You know what I’m saying. This is an awesome thing! But yet, there’s such an intimacy that we have because of what Christ has done in us, that He becomes our Papa. We can go to Him without that fear, knowing we’ll be loved and received. Praise God!

We cry by that Spirit, “Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

You see a purpose of the devil being worked out. You see another purpose of God being worked out, simultaneously. That’s the amazing thing, that God…I know His heart is filled with pain when He sees what’s going on, but there’s not one ounce of dismay in His heart as though…I was gonna say, oh My God, oh Myself!

( laughter ).

What am I gonna do? I didn’t plan on this. I didn’t think he was gonna do that. How can I pull this off? There is an utter rest! Do you know God wants us to enjoy that rest, that, in spite of the battle, the reality of the wars that we have to fight, there is a rest that we can enjoy? And it’s a rest because we know we’re in the hands of a God whose promises are true, who cannot fail, whose purposes have stood from before the world was and it will stand long afterwards. Praise God!

And we’re heirs! You know the Scripture refers to Abraham as God’s heir of the world! He’s talking about, out of all the people in this world, Abraham, you’re my heir. But Abraham had a big family, didn’t he? Not just Jews and Israelites. This is a spiritual family which includes many of them, thank God. But it includes you and me, if you know the Lord. We are Abraham’s children and together we share in the inheritance that God has purposed from the foundation of the world.

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” And so forth. He talks about the creation waiting for this, for God to finish what He’s doing in you and me.

You want to know why the Lord doesn’t jump in right now and stop all this? It’s because His purpose has to do with you and me, and getting us ready for that. There is a work that’s unfolding in your life and mine if you know Him. And I’ll tell you, the moment that work is done…He knows what it’s taking. He knows what it takes to get you and me ready.

Some of us may go by the way of the grave. Some of us may be here when He comes, I don’t know. I don’t know how it’s gonna unfold. But I’ll tell you, there’s something that He is doing and He is the only one who can do it. “…We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.” (KJV). There’s a supernatural thing that is going on.

When that’s done, it will be unveiled. You know, I’ve used the illustration before about an artist who paints a masterpiece. Does he typically let somebody watch the process? Or does he do this in secret in a studio, and whenever he’s not working on it, it’s all covered up? Think about the analogy of what God is doing. It’s covered up. The world doesn’t see. The world doesn’t see the masterpiece that He’s painting. But one day, it’s gonna be time for the unveiling. And suddenly, everybody is gonna understand.

I pray that you’ll be on the side that is the beneficiary of that, that’s part of that, instead of somebody who says, oh my God, it’s over. That day is coming and I’ll tell you, when that happens…all the creation is waiting for that to happen, and then all this suffering, every bit of pain, every bit of sorrow that’s part of this world is gonna be done away, forever! Thank God!

So he talks about how we groan inwardly, we pray, we reach out to God and all that, and God helps us in that. And then you get down to the awesome passage that begins, “And we know…” verse 28, “…that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (NIV).

So now put that in the context of where we’re at in history. Think about what’s unfolding as Satan takes…is allowed to take over the world system as never before. Is that messing up God’s plan? Or is He gonna take some of those ‘all things’ and turn them into the very means by which his purpose is going to be fulfilled?

You know, we see instances of where great spiritual darkness has settled in on a particular country, and then the reports start coming out, of how the awful life that the people have there and the disillusion and the experience, and people turning to Christ! You don’t think God’s gonna take some of the trouble that’s coming and cause people to wake up and realize, I need something? And God’s gonna take that very problem and turn it right around in the devil’s face and say, I’m rescuing this one from the very gates of hell and you can’t prevail against it! You can stop it!

( congregational amens ).

Some of you are old enough to remember the Tiananmen Massacre in China. You know Mao had his revolution and he just really put every…employed every possible means to brainwash and force the people into the mold of his vision for China.

And in the 80’s there came to be a movement among students to say, we need more freedom. It’s not just that you’ve got this system, but you’ve got corrupt people running it. It breeds corruption, because it’s absolute power over the populous! And if you get in a position of being an administrator of this system, there are all kinds of opportunities for you to take bribes, to be corrupt.

So that corruption bred a disillusionment in the eyes of the young. They began to rebel against it. They began to foment among themselves. They began to talk about the reforms that they needed to bring about. And they really believed they could rise up and reform the system. They weren’t trying to tear it down. They just wanted a voice to tear down the bad stuff, and so they massed finally in this great square in Beijing, Tiananmen Square.

For weeks they camped there, standing up to the government and saying, listen to us. Wake up! How many of you remember the final result of that when tanks rolled in and crushed them? People died. People scattered. And do you know what the Lord did about that? There was a tremendous vacuum, spiritual vacuum in so many of those young ones, who suddenly saw the true character of what they had been a part of.

And in that spiritual vacuum there was a tremendous spiritual awakening. God began to reach hearts that had just lost all hope in where they were at. You know, we’ve said many times, the underground church in China is somewhere north of a hundred million today. And the explosion came right out of that disillusionment.

I don’t know what the Lord has in the future, but I’ll tell you, we have a God who can bring light out of deep darkness when He wants to. You’ve heard of more recent testimonies of how the spiritual darkness of Iran, for example — let them listen to this, I don’t mind saying it — but how many people in that darkness have hungered and found disillusionment and reaching out for something, and God has reached them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. God, in this darkness, is going to reach His own. I pray that we can be instruments of that.

But, I’ll tell you, it’s gonna…one of the purposes of the darkness is to really prove which side somebody is on. I’ve said this before, what will happen if we continue…as we continue down this road, and real persecutions break out in this country, worse than it has? We don’t know what it is hardly, here. How many of these happy churches are gonna stay happy? Are you gonna see some people coming out of there, running for their lives, losing their hope? Here and there, you’re gonna find ones, though, that know the Lord. You’re gonna find a remnant that God is gonna bring out from all of this.

He’s got a people in this country. I praise God for that. He’s got a remnant—He’s got a remnant in the earth. But God is gonna use this darkness to absolutely finish the job that He set out to do. Do you want to be part of that? So do I.

Listen to what he says. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Think of that word ‘purpose.’ What is that purpose? “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son.” That’s where he’s going with this inward work that He’s doing.

I’ll tell you, when He finishes, that life begins to grow up and we stick with that, we trust Him, we look to Him to build that and to grow it up. Oh, what’s gonna happen when He changes this, when it’s gone? When the bodies that we wrestle with, they’re gone, all the resistance is gone, there’s nothing left but what He’s been doing? That’s where He’s going.

We’ll be like Him. Why? “…That he…” the Son, “…might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

Now what has the devil got to work with here? Do you think the devil is gonna sit around and say, hey, that’s great? He’s gonna fight it with tooth and nail. What has he got to work with? Okay. “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

God’s not gonna stop short. He’s not gonna bring us so far and leave us. He’s not gonna teach us to swim to let us drown…you know the song that we sing. But listen to this, “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?” Does the devil beat you up about all that’s wrong with you? You think maybe that’s just one of his tactics to hinder this process and to take away our courage and our faith and our confidence in God? Yeah, I know it is. You know it is, too.

What an awesome truth. Who will bring…I mean who is gonna do this? “It is God who justifies.” I didn’t come and say, God, I’m righteous! You’ve got to accept me. He did it! He charged my sins to Somebody else! They’ve been punished! They’ve been put away! I’ve surrendered! I’ve brought my sins to His feet and I’ve put my faith in Him! His promise is that I become dressed in the very righteousness of His Son! God did that! The highest authority in the universe said I’m righteous, I’m accepted! Who is gonna stand there and say, no, you’re not? Folks, we ought to be shouting!

( congregational amens ).

We ought to be resting in the promise and the hope of His promise. This is one of the devil’s mightiest weapons! It’s to undermine, because it undermines our inward confidence! Everything else comes from the outside! “Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” Now, you’ve got the devil trying mightily, to separate us somehow. “Shall trouble…” The devil is saying, boy I’ve just got to make some more trouble for them. I can discourage them. I’ll get them to give up. “…Or hardship or persecution….” Persecution, now there’s a good one. You know, the three centuries when the Church of Jesus Christ was born, the devil tried wave, after wave, after wave of brutal persecution. And finally he gave up and joined the church!

( laughter ).

That’s basically what happened. You know, you read things like “Foxe’s Book of Martyrs,” and you go back and there was one instance where you see what the Lord can do. There was one instance where, best I remember, there was a large group of believers who were being marched into icy waters to drown — to their death. Roman soldiers were guarding them. And their testimony, their demeanor, their spirit, their praise was so real, God used it to convict that Roman soldier to the point where he stripped off his armor and he joined them and marched to his death for the name of Christ!

I’ll tell you, in the midst of this, if God allows persecution, it’s gonna be a testimony to somebody. If he saves us out of a persecution, it’s gonna be a testimony to somebody. God is gonna give a witness to this generation! There will be no excuse when He’s done. God is gonna bring awesome glory and goodness out of everything that happens, no matter how evil and how wicked it is.

“…Hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” Now that doesn’t sound very inviting. But, if you ever get a look at what your nature really is, you’re gonna say, God, kill it.

( congregational amens ).

Make me alive with a different kind of life! My soul needs to be preserved by that other life, but this other thing, I want out. Lord, whatever you’ve got to do to deliver me from this, go for it.

Now if you don’t see that, if you still think you’re somebody, you’re not gonna see that. But I’ll tell you, if God ever opens your eyes, you’re gonna see His greatness and His mercy in engineering whatever it takes to deliver us from this thing that would otherwise destroy us along with the world. I want to live. I want to be part of His Kingdom.

Then Paul says, “No…” He doesn’t say, in spite of. He says, “…in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation…” I mean, he runs out of things to name,, but he says, look, if there’s anything else you can think of that might do it, I’m covering that, too.

Nothing, “…will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Folks, in what’s coming in this world, the reality of what we live in, we have a hiding place. We have an Ark of Safety that is completely safe, completely waterproof, completely devil-proof.

I’ll tell you, it’s an hour to take your choice and serve Christ, and wake up to what’s going on. Don’t let the world squeeze you into its mold and make you think like they do. Wake up and see what’s happening! See it through His eyes. Don’t just imagine this world is gonna go on and on and on, and we’re gonna solve all our problems, and conquer the planets and the galaxies, and all that. No. This world has an expiration date.

Just like the days of Noah, we’re gonna come down to a time when there’s only gonna be two kinds of people and there will be no more crossing the line. It will happen. It may happen in our lifetime, I don’t know. But that’s where we’re going. And I’ll tell you, the people who are on the wrong side of that line will find that they have hardened their hearts against the love of God that would have rescued them, that in great mercy and love, unfathomable love and mercy has reached out, time and time and time again and said, why do you want to die? I don’t want you to die. Live. Bow to My Son. Let Him rescue you.

But I’ll tell you, for those on the other side, thank God! There’s coming a day and it’s coming soon. He’s gonna come, and that moment He comes, you and I, who know Him, we’re gonna be changed in a moment.

( snapping fingers ).

In a twinkling of an eye, snap of the finger, and we’re just gonna be like Him. We’re gonna shine like the Sun in the kingdom of our Father. I know that’s hard to envision. We’re just so earthbound in our thinking. But that’s what His Word says. You think of the glory that they saw in Jesus on that mountain. All of a sudden they couldn’t…it was just like the sun! He glowed!

And yet, the Word tells us that we’re gonna be like that, one day. Only God can bring that off. Give your whole heart and your life to Him. Trust Him. He’s gonna bring His people through and no devil in hell can stop it. Praise God!

( congregational amens ).
