Transcript of message from TV Broadcast 1150 -- taken from Closed Captioning Text

— Brother Phil Enlow: I don’t know, I’ve had some thoughts percolating in my brain for quite some time and just — it seemed like maybe this is the occasion to kind of share some things and we’ll see what the Lord has in mind. But, turn if you will to Luke chapter 21.

And, this is probably…we’ll see where it goes, but this is probably gonna be one of those overview type things. But I believe there’s some truths that need to be brought to the front because if we…you know, it’s easy for us to hear about the love of God, the compassion of God, and all of those wonderful truths that we rejoice in. But I believe we need to see a full-orbed…a balance in the scriptures because God is not just loving and kind, He’s also holy and pure.

And you know, Jesus was talking to His disciples in this particular passage about the future of Israel, in particular, but He goes on beyond that to our day. And what was facing Israel as a nation was not love and kindness in…I mean, it was basically judgment that was coming. There was an absolute certainty of judgment that was coming because men had rejected the love and the kindness of God and decided…and joined forces with the enemy, with the Devil, going his way.

So anyway, Jesus said, let me pick it up in verse 10, I guess. “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.” (NIV). And right before that He’d said, you’re gonna see a whole lot of these kinds of things but the end is not yet.

“But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. This will result in your being witnesses to them. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.” Praise God!

“You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm you will gain life. When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.

“How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Praise God! I don’t know exactly where to begin, but let me begin in an odd place. How many of you have seen, over the last couple years or so, any of the National Geographic series, “Doomsday Preppers”? Wow! I thought more of you would have seen it than that, but anyway…it seems like there’s quite a movement in our nation of people who think that things are going to get really bad and their lives are built around preparing for that.

And you know, whenever I hear about that or listen to any of that I think of this scripture about men fainting from terror, “…apprehensive of what is coming on the world.” You know, even the people of the world see that things are just not gonna go on. And so, these Preppers, basically, the series would go and just interview a family or a group or somebody, and see what they’re doing, what it is they’re afraid of, and how they’re preparing for it, then they go and they follow somebody else.

And, some of the stuff they were preparing for was kind of nuts. But some of it, you know, is not that unrealistic. It would not take very much for our electrical grid to be destroyed and what would happen if everything electrical suddenly was fried? It would be a mess, wouldn’t it? You wouldn’t be able to get food to the grocery stores. You wouldn’t be able to drive anywhere or you wouldn’t be able to light your home, or heat it, or anything like that. It’d be a pretty serious mess.

And so, you’ve got people that are dealing with, how can I have energy, how can I have food? They’re stockpiling food. They are busy trying to get…make sure their ‘bug-out bag’ is handy, and they’ve got a ‘bug-out’ location to go to that’s safe. And they’re learning self-defense and fire arms, and stockpiling…you know, the whole business. ‘We’ve got to hang tough and defend ourselves against marauding bands that would come and steal our stuff that we’ve prepared so carefully.’

But you know…let me pause and say, I’ve had people actually ask me about this, what do I think about it? And when it comes right down to it, if society broke down, I think we’re gonna have to trust God, and realize that He’s got a purpose in it for us. But that isn’t what this is about. You know, people are so worried about all of these earthly catastrophes, and break-downs, and war, and terrorism, and all these things that could happen in the world, and they spend their lives preparing for something that ‘might’ happen, but I’ll tell you, there’s something that this world needs to reckon on and that ‘will’ happen!

( congregational amens ).

And that’s a lot more of what’s on my mind and my heart today, because this God, who is a God of love and mercy, and patient with His children, is also a God of holiness and judgment. Praise God!

Let’s…I don’t know, let’s just look at Isaiah chapter 2. This was particularly about, I think, the condition of Israel at the time. How would you like to be a prophet and get sent to your nation with a message like this? And yet, shouldn’t we have this message for today? Shouldn’t we be able to look the people of this world in the eye and say, judgment is coming?

This is a wicked world. It’s in rebellion against God, and God’s patience…right now, it’s an amazing thing that He’s patient with some of the stuff that you and I read and hear in the news every single day. But God is gonna finish His job. He’s gonna do what He has purposed to do. But there will come a day when that will run out.

“The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled), for all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty, and all the oaks of Bashan, for all the towering mountains and all the high hills, for every lofty tower and every fortified wall, for every trading ship and every stately vessel.

“The arrogance of man will be brought low and the pride of men humbled; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols will totally disappear. Men will flee to caves in the rocks and to holes in the ground from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth. In that day men will throw away to the rodents and bats their idols of silver and idols of gold, which they made to worship.”

My God, it’s not gods in the sense, unless you’re in India, or a few places like that, but it’s…we have our idols in this nation, and they’re made of all kinds of things. But anyway, they’re gonna throw them away. “They will flee to caverns in the rocks and to the overhanging crags from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth. Stop trusting in man…” Think about that. “Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?” I mean, who do men think they are? If a log falls on you…

( crunching sound ).

…That’s it. Men don’t realize they are one breath, one heartbeat away from eternity. And all God has to do is show up and say, it’s time. And there’s gonna come a time when it will be too late for people to do anything about it. And I believe, I don’t know, I just sense, as we’re moving along, that we need to see the reality of what the Lord has warned us about so many times over the years. Praise God!

There are so many scriptures I can’t even think of them right now. But let’s look over in Revelation. You see some of these same themes that are picked up. Revelation chapter 6, I think, is the one I’m thinking of particularly. And I’m not one of those that think that all of this is necessarily in chronological order but here’s a snap shot of something that’s coming.

In verse 12, “I watched…” John is writing this. “I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.”

Do you think people will get a little bit humble? My God, all we have to do is have a little earthquake or something that just shakes things up, and all of a sudden people are running, oh God, I repent, I repent…oh, how quickly do we cower in fear. And then when it gets all calm again everybody’s proud, and we don’t need God, we just…oh, my! They don’t have any idea.

“Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

This is just one of many, many pictures in the scriptures. If you’re gonna think about God, you’d better factor this in. This is a God who takes sin and rebellion seriously. You know, salvation…you could almost listen to a lot of what’s preached, and sometimes people just…well, most of the time, people filter it in with their carnal understanding and they see this kindly, loving God as almost indulgent. He’s looking down at our trouble and says, hey, I’ve got a better plan for your life. I want to help you here, I want to help you get through life a little better. Oh, my God! This is repent or perish!

You think about the message that Peter preached on the day of Pentecost. You think about the man who denied that he even knew the Lord when a little girl asked him. And then all of a sudden he met the risen Christ and he knew who he was then like never before.

And Jesus told Peter and the rest of the disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Go therefore, preach to all the nations. Then He told them to wait until they had power from on high, and God filled them with His power, and with His Spirit, and that same Peter stood up, with boldness he looked those people in the eye and he told them who Jesus was. And he told them what they’d done. He said, this same Jesus has been made Lord and Christ. You killed Him! But God has made Him Lord and Christ!

Oh my God! The Spirit of God convicted them and they suddenly realized, we have been God’s…we’re God’s enemies! Judgment is coming!

One of the scriptures that Peter…the main scripture that Peter quoted was from Joel 2. Later in the passage he talked about the coming of the outpouring of the Spirit. He says, before the what? The great and mighty day of the Lord! That expression, the day of the Lord, is something that is repeated throughout history, and it always has to do with the coming of judgment. When God’s hand comes down upon the world, or comes down upon whoever is the object of His judgment, at that point. Sometimes it was nations, in the Old Testament. It’s the day of the Lord!

Oh, I’ll tell you what, that’s something that they needed to reckon on. And they had…they were facing a day, because Peter said to them, save yourselves from what? This untoward, or this crooked generation! You’ve got a generation that is relentlessly walking towards judgment! It is certain!

This is not something that you better just…that nuts are gonna…and people that are just out of the main stream are gonna sit there and say, oh, I got to prepare for this. No, this is reality, folks. You better factor this into your plans. Judgment is coming. But you can, “…Save yourselves from this untoward generation.” (KJV).

You know, I thought about a scripture. Let’s see if I can find it quickly here. It was in the Old Testament. There was one scripture…yes, in Amos chapter 5, I believe it is. You had religious people here who were so blind that they actually…’oh, the day of the Lord, bring it on!’

Verse 18. “Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD! Why do you long for the day of the LORD? That day will be darkness, not light. It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light—pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?” (NIV).

Do you believe that that’s actually going to happen? This is not just some religious dogma. This is something that the Lord has…from the dawn of time, there has been a message that while the Lord is reaching out and He’s got a purpose, He’s gonna have a people…that this world absolutely is under the judgment of God. “Heaven and earth…” Jesus said, “…will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

You know, I don’t know who may hear this, but I’ll tell you, you better factor this in your plans. If you want to prepare for an electromagnetic pulse, fine. But you better prepare for this. Oh, my God! There is a judgment coming. “…It is appointed unto men once to die…” (KJV). And then what?

( congregational response ).

After that is judgment. There is a judgment day coming, and it’s getting closer and closer. “They will say, Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation. But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.” (NIV, 2 Peter 3:4-7).

You know, I was thinking about this business of these other preppers, doomsday preppers. And a while back I just had this thought that there’s another kind of prepping that we need to be concerned about, and it’s not doomsday, it’s redemption day!

( congregational amens ).

How many of you want to be a redemption day prepper?

( congregational amens ).

Praise God! That’s what…that’s the glorious thing. We need to be able to look people in the eye and say, look, this is reality. This is coming. We need to be as bold as Peter. We need to be as bold as Noah, as bold as John, as bold as Jesus and Paul and all the others, to be able to stand up and say, this world is under judgment. I don’t know when. God knows when. He has the calendar and he’s got it just right.

But if you think…if anybody is foolish enough to think that they’re gonna just go on and live their lives and somehow get away with it, maybe they’ll come to church and be a ‘Christian’ quote-unquote. And their concept of that is really, I’m…maybe it’s true and I better have a fire escape from…fire insurance policy in my…or judgment…anyway, you know what I’m talking about, judgment insurance, I guess. And if I just…I’ll be just religious enough that He’ll accept me, and I can sort of have a foot in both camps. I can live my life in the world and I can still sort of slide in.

No! There is a divide that is coming. You know, that word that we read in the Old Testament about the Lord warning, why are you wanting the day of the Lord to come? It’s gonna be a day of darkness, not light. He goes on to talk about how much He hated their religion! He said, you singing to me, it’s just noise, I hate it! I see your hearts! You’re wicked people! You’re trying to act religious, but you’re not changed on the inside! I hate that! And here you are. You want the day of the Lord to come? You’re crazy! Oh, my! This is serious! This is reality. And if we’re not living our lives as redemption-day preppers, anybody who isn’t is gonna get swallowed up by the darkness of this world.
