Transcript of message from TV Broadcast 1116 -- taken from Closed Captioning Text

— Brother Phil Enlow: I’ll tell you, God is watching in this hour. He’s not looking…let me back up and say this. When you preach like this, the devil loves to make us think in terms of, God is looking for performance. Oh, my God! Everything’s—everything is up in the air. It’s all dependent on me and my performance. Will I measure up? Oh, thank God it’s not that way!

( congregational amens ).

God is looking for hearts that just say, God, I’m yours. I’m trusting in You! The performers are gonna wind up in the Lake of Fire because they’re trusting in their performance. I’m trusting in Jesus! I have no power to save myself but He has the power to save me! Oh, thank God! I’m counting on that! I believe, like what Paul said. What did he say?

( laughing ).

( laughter ).

Don’t get old.

( laughter ).

He said, I’m persuaded, I’m convinced, “…that he is able.…” See, he wasn’t convinced…Paul wasn’t convinced that he, Paul, was able. Paul was convinced that He was able.

( congregational amens ).

To do what? “…To keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” But the problem is, so many people haven’t really committed themselves to Him. They haven’t let go of their lives, taken their hands off and say, Lord, I am yours. It doesn’t matter what the world…what happens in the world. I am Yours! I believe in You!

Man, there were so many scriptures that were shared this morning that just fit. “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” was one of them that was shared. I’ll tell you, if there is a conviction in your heart that is unshakeable, that God puts there, Jesus is, not was, ‘is’ the reigning Son of God, that makes all the difference.

( congregational amens ).

Because He who sits on that throne knows every heart in this place, and He is able to take the weakest, the one who is the least able, the one who feels their utter destitution before a holy God, that’s the one that He’s the most easily able to save, because it’s His power.

Oh, my! It’s not performance. Don’t let the devil make something like this fearful. It’s sober. It’s serious. But it’s not something where we have to be afraid, oh, my God, that’s something I’ll mess up and I won’t make it. I just want to put my trust in Him. God is absolutely putting people to the test.

And the thing is, there wasn’t a person here…I guess they knew some of it, to the extent they believed Malachi’s words, but these people were not aware of what was going on in heaven. I believe God wants us to be aware that heaven is watching. Heaven knows what’s going on in this world. And He’s looking to see who really has the faith of Jesus Christ in their hearts.

Oh, my! Don’t you be afraid if the devil wants to minister fear to you right now. But if you’re…if there’s something in you that is just driving you to do your thing…this is a word for you. God is looking on. And this world is headed for exactly what He’s describing here. The world we live in, no matter what it looks like, no matter who is in power and what they’re doing, what their agenda is, what their program is, God is over all of it!

( congregational amens ).

And we know that the devil is going to be allowed to take over this world’s system as he has never been manifested before! I don’t know what form that will take! But I know that God will never forsake His people!

( congregational amens ).

I know that He will absolutely minister the strength, and the hope, and the help that we need. But He’s looking for people whose hearts are gonna stand in such an hour, and He’s able to bring us through.

But you think of what we’ve used so many times in this regard, is the example of the Israelites who came out of Egypt. And the Lord said at the end, I led you the way you went, all the things you had to go through, I led you that way.

See, those were not accidents. Their experiences were not accidents! God was leading! Why? I wanted to prove you. I wanted to know what was in your heart. I wanted to know if you’d really serve me or not.

Well, how do you tell that? You know when you back a bunch of people up to the Red Sea, and the army is coming, and the Lord opens the water…duh. You get on your high horse, and you go through the water. Man, I can believe in a God like that. Look at the excitement. Look at…the fire is flying! It’s exciting to see a miracle-working God do such a great thing! And they got on the other side, and they danced, and they shouted. And they saw the Egyptian armies destroyed in the water, knew that they never had to fear them again. Anybody can believe God, quote-unquote, under those circumstances.

Then it took about three days for them to get in a place where they didn’t have any water. And so they got together, and they had a prayer meeting, and they praised God.

( laughter ).

Lord, we remember how You delivered us, and we know that You’ve brought us this way. You’re a miracle-working God. Lord, we’re thirsty. We’re trusting in You. No, they didn’t do that, did they? What’s the matter with you, Moses? You brought us out into the wilderness to die? We don’t have any water.

You see what’s really coming out? All God has to do is to allow the right circumstances, and what’s in the heart will come out. God, in His wisdom, is allowing things to be as they are on a big scale, but in the details of your life and mine. What will we do in the face of life’s challenges? Will we stand fast, or will we say, well, it’s been good up to now, but I’m out of here? This is a bridge too far.

There is no bridge too far. “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” (KJV). I’ll tell you, if you’ve got that conviction in your heart, you’ve got all you need in Him. But the warning is to people who are just, who don’t get this. Only God can open eyes.

But you see this over and over again in the Israelites. They see the greatness and the power of God at Mt. Sinai. A few weeks later, ‘I don’t know what happened to Moses.’ We better make us a calf and dance around that, a heathen idol. How little did it take to bring out their unbelief?

You know that one time where it says something about the way was…I’d have to paraphrase it. The way was boring, I guess. It didn’t seem like anything was happening. People became discouraged because of the way. Well, who led them that way?

( congregational response ).

Why did He lead them that way?

( congregational response ).

To find out what was in their hearts. Well, He found out, didn’t He? Man, they complained, and a whole bunch of people died in that experience. Oh, I thank God for His faithfulness and His mercy. I thank Him that He is our God today.

But you know a lot of people can be stirred. I think I sort of intimated this earlier in another context, but a lot of people can be stirred in their minds. You can get them excited in their emotions. And to all intents and purposes they will appear to be real believers! But until God strips away the emotions…they’re gone, and He puts you in a place that is perplexing, and you don’t have the answer to something, and you look around…who makes you look around, by the way? You look around, and everybody else seems to be doing good, and you think something is wrong. That’s when it matters. That’s when faith, real faith, shows up, and you find out what’s in people’s hearts.

There’s a lot of religion that depends upon people’s experiences, emotions, crowds, a whole lot of things that are just external, that never get down into the heart. I want to be, I want to occupy the same place, in this respect at least, that Brother Thomas did, and all of us…you understand what I’m saying. I want to occupy that place of just saying, God, Your time, Your way, whatever You want, whenever You want it, that’s what I want. If You wait, and I die in the meantime and it never seems like anything happens, You are still God, and I am trusting in You.

( congregational amens ).

I think I mentioned recently how many times there have been men of God who have labored in hard fields for Him and seen no result. And somebody comes along later and sees great result. Was it you, Carl, who read the scripture this morning about one, somebody was anyway…that one plants, another waters? God gives the increase. No, it was the scripture where Jesus was talking about it. You’re entering into a harvest or labor that you didn’t labor for this, but you get to gather the harvest. Other men labored, and you’re entering into that.

Folks, if we are in His Kingdom, whatever God sets before us, is what we need to do! And it’s all God is looking for, is a heart of faith! It doesn’t matter what the outward results are! In the end, God is going to be God, and His results are gonna be right! You think of the people who had to stand through centuries of religious darkness and say, I don’t care what the rest of the people do! I believe God! I’m faithful to Him! I know He’s real! I believe His promises! And they died in faith!

That’s what God is looking for from every one of us, to stand fast, and to know. You know, the hardest thing that I have to believe, to believe in? I shared this with the men this morning. When I look inside, and the longer I go, the more I feel my need, the more I recognize what’s wrong with me. It’s not to say, oh, God can have a glorious church. It’s to say, oh my God, how could I ever be part of that? But part of believing God is believing His promise that He is able.

( congregational amens ).

He can save to the uttermost those who come to God by Him. It is not my ability to change myself, it’s my surrender to Him, and trusting in what Jesus did at the cross, and the power of the resurrection. That’s my only hope today.

We have, every one of us, exactly the same resource that every believer who’s ever walked this planet has had. We have the promises of God. We have the forgiveness of the blood of Christ that has blotted out our sins. We have His life to dwell in us and to change us. You go to the end of our story. What are some of the promises we have? Don’t look at me like that.

( laughter ).

( laughing ).

What about, ‘the marriage supper of the lamb has come’ and ‘his bride has made herself ready’? That sounds like an amazing thing for people like us to be ready for that. Wow! Only God could engineer that. But I’ll tell you, believers are gonna hang in when you don’t see that and you don’t feel that. It doesn’t seem like it could ever be. They’re like Abraham who got to the point where he didn’t see how he could ever have a son. Did that stop God? Was God’s promise still true? Did he have a son?

( congregational response ).

Yes, he did. Sarah who couldn’t physically have a son, had a son. Praise God! We serve the same God that made that promise to Abraham. And Jesus is the One who is building His church. And through Paul, He said it’s going to be a glorious church. He’s gonna present it to Himself, what? A glorious church without, “…spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.”

My God, what a picture we have! What a hope that God has given to us! But I want to be one of those that says, God, I don’t know how You can do such a thing, but I believe Your promise! And I want to be one that’s not busy trying to be religious, and trying to make a show in the flesh about being successful in the eyes of men.

I want to be Yours, and I want to hear Your voice, and I want to walk with You, and I want to walk with Your people, and I want to be an instrument for Your purposes! I don’t care what anybody else thinks! I want to please You! Do you think that maybe that’s what God’s looking for? I know it is—I know it is.

I was just thinking some other scriptures…ones that we know in Matthew 24. I believe they certainly give us a picture of the world that we’re called to live in in the end of the age. I’m not gonna read a lot of it, but they’re asking about the end of the age. And I believe, obviously, these words had an application to them in their day, but I believe they have an application doubly so in ours.

“Watch out that no one deceives you.” Verse 4. “For many will come in my name, claiming, I am the Christ, and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed.” (NIV). Praise God! You know, we need that. We hear about all kinds of things that are alarming. But God doesn’t want us to be alarmed as though somehow that’s gonna mess up God’s program, and we’re gonna come out on the wrong end of the deal. Don’t be alarmed by that.

“Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” If that’s the beginning, the birth itself is gonna be a challenge, isn’t it? But not for God.

Listen to this. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.” Somehow a scripture like that, it’s hard for us to relate to that in America. We live in a nation that has been an anomaly in history. There’s hardly a nation you can point to where God’s people have not been hated and persecuted. Anybody here see the spirit of what’s going on in our nation? It is a relentless attack upon Christ and anyone who believes in Him. You see it? You see what’s coming? We need the Lord, and His promises will carry us through.

But if we’re gonna serve God, this scripture has its application to us. If we serve Him, we’ll be hated by all nations. You want to be popular? You’re in the wrong place. I want to be thought of well in Heaven.

“You will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.” What’s the fruit of that, of that kind of a world, that kind of a condition? “At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.”

Do you see the wisdom of God in allowing conditions that make manifest the true condition of people’s hearts? Right now in America, you can sit in a pew and sing “Amazing Grace” and be the biggest hypocrite in the world. And people that don’t know you real well will think you’re a great Christian.

You wonder why the name of Christ is reviled by so many. It’s because He’s misrepresented and blasphemed by so many. God’s gonna make the separation. He is separating. Oh my. Didn’t He say at the end of the age there’s gonna be a separation of the wheat and the tares? God’s gonna do that. We’re seeing that in a small measure. We’re gonna see that unfold as time goes along.

“Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most…” this translation says, “…will grow cold.” Now here you go. You’ve got external circumstances in control. You do not have an anchor for your soul down here. That’s what we’ve got to have. That’s what men need, is a conviction from Heaven that Jesus Christ is who He says He is, that salvation is real, that His promises are real! Then the external things come and they can’t get to that!

But if people are dependent on feeling good, and being successful, and all the other things, and being looked well upon by other people, God’s gonna fix it to where that’s all stripped away. Do you want to be among one of those that stands in that hour? We’ve got somebody who can make us stand. It’s not our power that will do it. It’s His, His faithfulness.

“Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.” And I just want to reiterate He’s not talking about performance. Oh, God. I need Him every day. But He is talking about somebody whose conviction is Heaven-born in the heart. I know who He is. My hope is in Him. I’m trusting in Him.

I don’t know. Somehow I just sense the Lord wanting to connect for us the dots between where we’re at in history and what’s going on in our world. We’re seeing hearts turn away from God. We’re seeing unbelief rise to the surface and drive men away from God. But God is gonna take that same darkness and He’s going to use it to stir the hearts of His people. We need to be awake.

I believe there are a lot of sleeping Christians across this country, and God is gonna use it to waken them up, and they’re gonna start talking to each other. God is gonna make connections. We can talk about the darkness, but I’m excited about what God is gonna do in this hour, because He’s gonna finish the work that He has promised. He’s going to have that church that will be without spot or wrinkle. Only He has the power to engineer that. I want to be part of it.

( congregational amens ).

I pray that everyone who hears this will get this, not because my words are eloquent. They certainly aren’t, but because of His Spirit’s conviction. I want to be one that just trusts Him. If the devil’s telling you, we’re just sitting here, we’re doing this…we’re not…we ought to be out doing stuff. Look at this. Look at that. I say, look at Him.

There’s a time for things to happen. I don’t want to justify laying around and not doing anything, but what is it that we’re doing? We need to have His headship and His leadership in what we do. There’s a time to do. There’s a time to wait. There’s a time for every season under the sun. Many times…someone mentioned this morning the need for patience and how readily we gravitate to that…not!

( laughing ).

( laughter ).

How natural that is for us. But you know, we learn patience by having to be patient, and having to trust God, and having to fight that battle, fight through and say, God, I don’t care. It doesn’t look good. Nothing looks like it should be. But I know who You are, and I know what You’ve promised. You take control. I surrender. If we do that, I’ll tell you, it’s gonna turn out all right. God’s promises are true, and one day we will stand there.

And I’ll tell you, we’re gonna be amazed when we see what happens with the division. You’re gonna have a whole lot of people over here. Some of them who thought they were over here. And God is gonna make manifest that they didn’t really have any faith at all. They just had a dose of religion.

But God is able to do that miracle in any heart that will humble themselves before Him, and put their trust in Him when He calls. So I just commit this word into His hands. Perhaps there’s something else the Lord wants to share, but I think I’ve said everything I’m supposed to. Praise God!
