— Brother Phil Enlow: Oh, I’ll tell you, you can’t lose serving the Lord! And I don’t care what the temporary circumstances are that involve laying down our lives and saying no…oh, the reward is eternal! Praise God! Do we have something to live for this morning?

( congregational response ).

Praise the Lord! And of course, you know the rest of the story, how God brought her to the attention of one of Naomi’s relatives, a wealthy man named Boaz, and he was in the middle of his harvest, and she went out and harvested in his fields, and he took note of her. And you know, her reputation had gone before her. Everybody knew about this young woman and how she had made that radical choice. There was already a respect for this woman. God had put that in the hearts of His people.

That tells me, God had some people! They weren’t all bad. They weren’t all a bunch of idolaters. God had some people who had some real conviction about serving Him. And so, God absolutely worked one thing after another, after another. She wasn’t out saying, how can I get ahead, how can I do this? She wasn’t scheming, she wasn’t doing anything. Just trusting God and doing what came to her hand, and you see God maneuver one step at a time until she winds up as Boaz’s wife.

And God blesses them and they have a son named Obed. Obed had a son named Jesse. Jesse had a son named David. And all of a sudden, you have this heathen girl brought in, given a divine revelation, and she steps right into the line of God’s eternal purpose, and she actually was one of the progenitors of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to the flesh. I’ll tell you, we serve a great God!

( congregational response ).

We serve a God who is worthy to be served, whatever the cost. But oh, God is gonna bring every soul that He brings to Himself to that point. Which are you gonna go—which way are you gonna go? And I don’t know whose…I don’t know who this may apply to. I have no idea. But somehow, I cannot shake it and so, you know, halting words, whatever is gonna come out, that’s…I pray that God will absolutely convict somebody.

( congregational amens ).

Because when he does, it’s His love, it’s His mercy, even as it was in the case of Ruth, to give her a conviction! A conviction, we think of it as a negative thing. Oh God, I’ve got to face my sins, I’ve got to face all this. Yeah, that’s part of it. But the conviction is not just that you’re a sinner needing a savior, the conviction is that Jesus Christ is a Savior who is worthy to be served and worthy of your life!

( congregational response ).

He can be trusted with every issue of your life, and you’re gonna cast your lot with Him for time and eternity. It is a turning and going away. I’ll tell you, I don’t get any sense here that Ruth was even looking back. Do you? Her eyes were so focused on the future that she left that. She didn’t just leave her family, she left her god. She left it all, to be completely identified with the people of God.

I mean, who could think of so many other examples? What about Moses? It didn’t look so good for him for a while, did it? He came to years, and he came to a point of choice in his life. You know, in theory, he could have simply remained where he was. He could have rationalized all that very easily and said, well look, in the providence of God I’m in Pharaoh’s household. Look at all the good that I can do. Yes, I love my people, but I want to stay here.

Lord, have mercy. I met…it takes me back to something that I remember years ago when the Lord was first bringing me into this work, and just a conviction of what religious systems were, and the fact that you couldn’t reform a lot of them. I mean, there’re a lot of places out there that are beyond reform, where the only answer is for people to come out of them.

I was in a church talking to a man I had known in college, I guess…well, I won’t get into the circumstances. But anyway, I was there and talking and sharing some of these things. They were fresh, and they were new in my mind. God’s restoring His church. God’s got a vision beyond what you’re a part of. And he was just agreeing with me. Isn’t this wonderful? Yeah, you go for it, almost was his attitude. But I’m gonna stay here and work for it here.

Well, I tell you what, we’re gonna have to cast our lot with Him. We don’t have the privilege of setting the conditions. If you’re gonna serve God, you better do what He says. Let Him work out the plan. God has a glorious plan that He has conceived from the foundation of the world, and it involves you, and you, and you, and you! It isn’t just a handful of these famous people. Every child of God has a place in the economy of God. And if you are to walk in that place, He is gonna call you to cast your lot, and you turn your back, and not look back.

And so when Moses came to years, he was determined…he turned aside from all that he had with Pharaoh, and cast his lot with the people of God, slaves. And almost instantly, it cost him everything, didn’t it? He was running for his life, probably just barely survived the trip across the desert. I don’t know…that’s how Hollywood portrays it anyway. I’m sure it wasn’t a fun time. But he got there anyway, and he winds up marrying a shepherd girl and settling down, and figured that was the end of his life.

But God had plans, didn’t He? I’ll tell you…and it isn’t just that we serve Him in the anticipation of, oh yeah, I’m gonna be somebody great someday. I’ll tell you, we’re gonna serve Him, come hell or high water, because whether the reward or whether the blessing, as we think of it…whether it comes in this life or it comes in the next, I’ll tell you, my reward is eternal.

( congregational amens ).

What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, Jesus said, and loses his soul? Because that is the choice! You want that? Okay, you can have it! But you’re gonna lose your soul. But oh, those who let go, those who say, yes Lord, I need You…I want You, I want You now. Take my heart. Take my life. Take everything. Just work in me. Do what needs to be done. My life is Yours to do with as You please.

Oh, I’ll tell you what, do you think He’s a terrible taskmaster who’s just gonna do everything He can to say, oh boy, look at the opportunity I’m gonna have to make their lives so miserable? This is gonna be fun! Do you think that’s how He is? God has to bring us through hard places sometimes. You know why He does that?

( congregational response ).

To deliver us, to set us free from things that He knows have such a strong hold in us that we don’t have the power to let go. Sometimes He has to put His hand upon us to make us let go. That’s what He was doing with Moses. Moses was out there in a place where he wouldn’t have chosen. I mean, he didn’t know that’s what he was choosing when he made the choice, but God brought him there to take everything away in the natural, and strip him so that he could actually become the mightiest prophet of the Old Testament.

You come back to the New Testament, and you think of the disciples. And of course, they walked with Jesus, didn’t they? And sometimes it was fun. It was wonderful. Crowds were following! There were miracles! It was just…wow! This is amazing. And here we are in the inner circle…how people are honoring us. We’re going around…we can cast out devils. We can do all these wonderful things, and Jesus is just drawing the wonderful crowds. Man, the Kingdom of God is coming. This is awesome!

Until Jesus said a few things that didn’t quite set too well with His hearers, and even those who had counted themselves to be His disciples went back. We know from Acts 1 that there was still a company that was with Him, but it shrunk. It got ‘shrunked’ real good there.

( laughter ).

We’ll invent that little word. But anyway, Jesus was focused on the 12, and He said to Peter, are you gonna go away? See, here was the opportunity. You know, Jesus doesn’t beg people. If you’ve got a conviction from Him, He ain’t gonna be run off. And Peter, he had no idea what Jesus had meant by that. He had no idea any more than anybody else. If somebody had come up and said, what in the world did He mean by that? He would’ve said, beats me…however they would have said it in Aramaic, I guess.

( laughter ).

They probably had a similar expression. But anyway…but you know, when the Lord posed that question to him, what did he say?

( congregational response ).

Where am I gonna go? Why? You have the words of eternal life! Well, how did he know that? The Heavenly Father revealed it to him. That’s what it takes to be a part of what God is doing. It takes a divine work in here. It isn’t about following a preacher. There’s a lot of people, who religiously now, they’re just running after their favorite preacher. God, help us. We need Jesus.

( congregational response ).

But I’ll tell you, what we need here is a people who are so convinced that Jesus is real, and that He has called them to be a part of a people, who, in case you haven’t noticed, are full of flaws. Just look in the mirror, you’ll find plenty. But who are, nonetheless, in God’s hands being led and being worked in with eternity in mind. And God’s gonna bring it down to times when it isn’t fun. Sometimes it gets ugly. Sometimes it gets messy. Sometimes things don’t go very well in the natural.

My God, you think of the people of God who had to stand throughout history, the prophets who had…God would give them a message of judgment and warning, and I can almost hear them say, Lord, do You really want me to go out there and tell them that? Do You know what they’re gonna do to me? But yet, there was such a conviction, such a call of God, such a reality, that they were willing to go and stand in the face of the king and say, repent, you’re a wicked man.

And sometimes it costs them their life. And some, they had to go run and hide in caves, and live as the off-scouring of the earth. You know, it might come to that? I don’t know. This country is far too comfortable. It’s hard to tell who’s really a Christian or not, but God is going to arrange circumstances where you’re gonna make radical choice. Am I going to preserve my life in this world and do what I want, or am I gonna follow Jesus, and give my heart to Him?

Boy, it came down to brass tacks, didn’t it, as we say, when the crucifixion came around? Not only did they have to…let’s just focus on Peter. Not only did Peter have to focus on his own illusions, many of them being shattered, within the course of a week! They went from crowds following Jesus, saying, Hosanna to the King! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (KJV). I mean, just crowds of people coming around and following. And all of a sudden, a few days later…crucify Him, crucify Him! He’s not fit to live! Wait a minute! I thought the Kingdom of God was coming! What’s going on here? I don’t get this!

And he found his own weakness to be so great that he actually denied he even knew the Lord. He panicked. He just gave into his weakness. And so there he is. But you know what really blesses and amazes me…that even in the face of that circumstance…and you think about the sense of, my God, I don’t get this. I don’t understand, even though Jesus had told them. They didn’t understand at all. They were just full of fear and wonder. Oh God, has everything we’ve been living for been a lie? And the devil…you can imagine what the devil was telling them. Have you ever been there?

( congregational response ).

Yeah. Well what held you?

( congregational response ).

Yeah, you knew something down deeper that was real…somehow! What blesses me is, in spite of that, Peter didn’t run off! He hung around! The disciples hung around! And all the time, they were standing fast and looking to God, even though they didn’t understand…they were dying a little bit inside, yet the day came of the Resurrection! And all of a sudden, defeat—seeming defeat turned into glorious victory! Folks, it’s worth everything to serve God!

( congregational amens ).

It’s worth everything to serve Jesus Christ and to give your life to Him! Oh think of…and yet, still their lives…going ahead, it wasn’t popular, certainly there was no earthly advantage. Now yes, God blessed them here and there, but I’ll tell you, every one of the apostles…well, Judas of course, got out of the picture pretty quick. But every single one of them died as a martyr, sooner or later, except John. And they tried to kill him, and it didn’t work. God preserved him, ‘cause He had more work for him to do.

Well, I’ll tell you, we have a God who can take care of those kinds of things, don’t we? We’ve got a God that if it pleases Him, He can bring His children out of the fiery furnace, and Daniel out of the lion’s den, and rescue Peter out of prison when they’re determined to kill him in the morning. I’ll tell you, it’s a wonderful thing to be in the Lord’s hands…to just leave all those issues to Him and say, Lord, like Paul said, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (NIV). What a deal!

But I’ll tell you, the alternative is to live in this world and struggle through its heartaches, and its misery and its trouble. And even if you’re one that manages to become a billionaire, and you think you’ve really got it made, do you think that’s gonna make anybody happy? History testifies it does not. And then to face the end and say, my God, this life that I was so intent on preserving, now I’m gonna have to give it up. Then what? You don’t want to know—you don’t want to know. I’ll tell you, one glimpse of the other side…what does the song say? “One glimpse of His dear face all sorrow will erase.” Praise God!

( congregational amens ).

If you’ve got sorrow in your life, there’s gonna come a day when it will be so swallowed up with the joy of the power of what His resurrection accomplished, that we won’t even be able to contain it. God’s gonna have to give us new bodies, because we can’t handle that. We can’t handle the joy. We can’t handle the glory. We can’t handle anything, but God’s gonna make us able to enjoy everything that He has.

So I don’t know, I just have this sense that there’re people here who haven’t quite reached that point in your life where you’ve really, really cast your lot, for time and eternity, with God’s people and with Christ. And I want to tell you, and I’ll go back to the verse that Mike quoted. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I sort of struggled with this and didn’t get up right away, so that he could read that verse.

But that’s God promise…that if you seek Him, with all of your heart, He’ll hear you. You lack that conviction right now? You lack that revelation? You cry out to God, if you feel any sense of your need. That alone is a witness that God is working with your heart. That ought to be shouting ground, folks! If you have any concern about any of these issues, God’s talking to you! The God of the universe is taking special notice of you, right where you’re at and trying to deal with your heart, because He loves you! And I would just exhort you with all of my heart, you cry out to Him.

And I’ll tell you, the moment He brings you to that place where you make that choice, He’ll make you able to make it if you really surrender to Him. His grace will enable you to believe and surrender. That’s the only way it will happen. It won’t happen because I say so. It won’t happen because mama and daddy say so. And I’ll tell you, it’ll happen regardless of mommy and daddy if you set your heart to seek God, because you’re gonna answer for Him, not them…or for yourself rather.

I’ll tell you, there’s a God who will breathe life into you, and witness His peace. And you know, when we know Him, it gets to a point where it doesn’t matter. The circumstances of life, we can give Him…we can be like Paul. I know how to abound. I know how to get along when I’ve got a lot, without letting it get to me. And I know how to have very little, and not be upset and angry with God, but just to trust Him. Boy, that’s a path of peace and joy.

And you know something? It won’t be just you and Jesus. It won’t be this American individualism. It’ll be a collective, a people who walk together, who share the life of Christ, who walk together because they have the same revelation.

So where are you at this morning? Does this apply to you? I’ll just simply put it out there and let God work with hearts. Let’s pray! Folks, we say this all the time, but we need to really and truly ask God to take and work with hearts, ‘cause it doesn’t matter how well it’s explained or not explained. You can have somebody stand up here in broken English, say one thing and it be exactly what God would take and use.

It’s not the eloquence of preaching. It’s a good thing. But I’ll tell you what, God is reaching hearts in this hour. He’s gonna bring circumstances in your life to where this choice will be faced and made. When that day comes, give Him your life. Give Him your heart. Put your trust in Him, and cast your lot with the people of God, for time and eternity. You will never, ever be sorry. Praise God!

e something to live for this morning?

( congregational response ).

Praise the Lord!

Praise God!
