— Brother Phil Enlow: Praise the Lord for His presence. You know, the Word of God tells us that when we’re weak, we’re strong. If that’s true, I must be Samson this morning.

( laughter ).

Anybody else in that category? We just need the Lord, don’t we? I’ve been trying to write a little bit lately. I’m behind as usual, but until last evening I didn’t really consider what I’ve been writing as something to preach about particularly, or specifically I guess. But I don’t know, I’m not so sure. I think I’m going to, by faith, just launch out and ask the Lord to help me to just share some thoughts.

Everybody remembers, you might not remember the date, but you certainly remember what happened on December 14th up in Newtown, Connecticut. And I know we made some comments about that afterwards. But I don’t know, it seemed like the Lord just quickened some thoughts, ‘cause you know, you read all the pundits and all the people who tried to explain what’s going on, and why, and what do you do about it.

And after a while I got a belly-full just reading everybody’s comments, ‘cause I don’t think … I don’t remember reading anybody that really hit it—that really got to the real issues. They’re talking about all the superficial stuff … Adam Lanza was a misfit, and he was ignored, and he was treated badly, and he was this and he was that … society should have watched out for him and done more for him, and just a 1,001 natural things in the natural realm. Basically they add up to one thing. It wasn’t his fault, it was our fault.

And there’s a strong view of that sort of thing in the world. And the real root of all of that kind of thinking is very simple … that we have been moved off of a foundation of a real belief of God and a divine order in the world, into an evolutionary view. Man is basically a higher order animal. He is evolving upward and it’s the job of the movers and shakers and thinkers of our society to mold the race, eliminate the bad stuff, encourage the good, and just cause man to rise up endlessly, improving himself—improving the race.

I mean, you see that in everything. And you could spend a long time just documenting that. But, as much as I enjoyed many of the episodes of Star Trek, that was the theme. You just have to kind of filter out a lot of that stuff, but the real message is, man is perfectible. And it’s up to us to seize the moment and perfect ourselves, and grow, and we’ll reach a time when crime will be eliminated and we’ll be better people and that kind of junk. I was gonna use a different word, but I won’t. But anyway, that’s the approach a lot of people have taken.

The scary thing is that the people who are taking that approach don’t realize they’re in the same condition as Adam Lanza. That’s the world we live in. It may not express itself the same way, but they live under the same power.

And, I read a few people, a few writers, who made the comment, well, our culture has disintegrated because we kicked God out of schools, and a number of other things along that line and there’s some truth. We certainly have moved away from our heritage and that’s another thing you could spend a lot of time talking about. But, it really is dealing with symptoms rather than the real issues.

And of course, all you have to do is say something like that and you’re gonna get one of these liberal pundits who’ll just have a cow over it. And one of them said, oh, you mean that God is retaliating against us in killing children because we kicked prayer out of school. Good Lord! Talk about blindness.

By the way, that prayer was a pretty innocuous thing. I happened to be among the last group of people who actually prayed that prayer in school, the one that was kicked out—the one that was made illegal. I was a high school student in one of the New York state schools at the time, and every morning we’d start our … I don’t know how they do it now, but we started our day in homeroom. And there was a certain amount of business we’d take care of for about five minutes and one of them was to stand up and give the Pledge of Allegiance, where we actually said, “one nation under God.”

And then the other thing was, though, that we stood and we recited a prayer. I can’t remember … somebody possibly led it over the loud speaker, but whatever it was, it was, “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence on Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our country. Amen.” That’s what gave the atheists such a cow. We can’t have that. That’s establishing religion. Kick it out. And a tiny little minority of people objecting to that got that kicked out. I think it’s wonderful and interesting that the lady who really spearheaded that, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, her son became a Christian later. Praise God!

Payback.

( laughter ).

Praise the Lord! But anyway … all of these things kind of leave you without the full picture. And if you don’t have the full picture, you don’t know what in the world, how to react to it. But you know, I believe God’s people need to understand a little better the world we live in. If you listen to all of the people who are writing and talking about what happened there, and why, and all that stuff, you would get the impression that the only players in the drama are people, and maybe God … but where was He? Why didn’t He do something?

But that’s not the world we live in, folks. We live in a world that is ruled by an unseen kingdom, that has arrayed itself against God, and is in control of life on this planet. I don’t mean … that God doesn’t have the higher control. But I mean, in terms of the world system that operates here, there is a god of this world, and he is evil, and he is the source of all the wickedness that we see, and he is at work.

Just a couple of scriptures that everybody knows, and I’ll just refer to these because there’s a lot of scripture you can use. But one of them, I guess, is the end of 1st John, right at the very end of it, you can look this one up. It talks about the whole world being under the control of the evil one. John says, we know that we are of God, but the world is under the control of the evil one.

And you look back at Ephesians, you see several references to the same thing. Look at the scripture we’ve read so many times from Ephesians chapter 2. Because Paul is writing here and describing what life was like, and that the state of people who had come to Christ, these were Gentiles who’d come to Christ … and where were you at before Christ revealed Himself to you and delivered you from this kingdom, what was your life like?

He says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.” (NIV).

Folks, that’s the world we live in. That’s the underlying thing that’s going on here that people are absolutely blind to, they have no concept of why such things happen. And of course, they live under this delusion of evolutionism. It’s responsible for so many of the ‘isms’ of our world.

You know, when I was young, we called it Communism. Now they call the same thing Progressivism. And it has taken deep, deep root in our society, and it is a Godless, atheistic philosophy that is out to destroy everything that was ever good about this country, with all of its warts and all of its faults and failings. And I’ll tell you, we are seeing the symptoms of that. And the fact is, that apart from God, men are absolutely helpless. They live and they die under the power of Satan and they do not know it. They don’t understand what’s going on. They have no clue. And of course, saying that makes it sound like we are just powerless and therefore not responsible. Well that’s nuts!

I’m gonna back up and throw in one thing that I have mentioned. I don’t have the article, obviously, to refer to, and so this will not exactly track everything I’ve said in it, but there’ll be a little bit of bonus content today, too, so it’ll all average out. But how many of you have ever had somebody throw up to you the old supposed dilemma, and they’ll tell you God cannot be both good and all powerful. Anybody ever hear that one?

Because if He’s all powerful, then He can’t be good, because bad stuff happens. And if He’s good, then He can’t be all powerful, because bad stuff happens. He doesn’t stop it. Well, that completely overlooks the reality of the world we live in and the purpose. Men are absolutely responsible before God. We chose to rebel against Him in the beginning. We turned all that God had given to us in the beautiful creation of the beginning over to the Devil. He gave our first parents a beautiful creation and gave them the responsibility. I give this to you to rule over. Anybody remember that?

( congregational response ).

It’s yours to rule over. So what happened? They disobeyed God. They turned and rebelled against Him. They joined the rebellion that Lucifer had begun in the beginning when he said, I will be like God. I’m gonna be like God. I want the same place He has. I want to be worshiped, I want to rule. I want dominion and power. And he came down and tricked Eve and then Adam followed suit. And what they did basically was turn the world over to the devil.

And even though it’s true that we have no power to escape this power apart from God, the fact is, we are responsible, because we choose. God doesn’t instigate evil things! Men do. You want to know where it comes from? Look at James chapter 1, just remember the scripture that we’re familiar with. It says, “When tempted ….” It doesn’t say, if you happen to be tempted. It says, when you’re tempted. “When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.”

Just mark it down. You see something evil, don’t you go blaming God. Boy, the devil loves to have it both ways. You know, it’s part of his political playbook, as well as everything else. “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” Everybody heard that expression? It comes right out of the playbook of some of the Communists of our country.

But I’ll tell you, this is a perfect example here where the Devil didn’t miss a trick. He caused all of this havoc that we saw in Newtown. That was just one example of many that you know about. And then he turns around and wants people to blame God. God, where were You? Why didn’t You stop it?

What utter arrogance of people who expect God to keep all the bad stuff from happening! Why? So we can be free to be rebels? That’s what they want. They want all the consequences of sin to be eliminated, so that they can do as they please, live as rebels against God and nothing bad is ever going to happen. Well, it ain’t gonna be that way, is it? Whatever a man sows, he reaps. They that sow to the flesh, shall of the flesh reap …

( congregational response ).

Corruption. Folks, you want to know why this world is full of wickedness, full of corruption? It’s because of lusts. It’s because men follow their own desires which have been corrupted to the service of self. God equipped us with some wonderful abilities and desires. Every one of which finds its place within His order. But every one of them has been twisted into something that is destructive. Praise God!

Let no one say, “… God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.” So all you think you’re doing is following your own desires. What you don’t see is there is a devil on the other end that is manipulating you and just absolutely has your destruction in mind.

“Then, after ….” Now what’s the end of all that? The devil knows it. He hates you, but he’ll sure use you as long as he can. “Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” That’s how it happens. That’s where our world is at.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but in my student days, I remember talking to a man on the streets of Brooklyn. And he was very proud and I was trying to talk to him about the Lord, and he said, “I don’t serve the Lord, but I don’t serve the devil either.” Yeah, right! That man had no clue.

You know how you serve the devil? All you have to do is just serve yourself. That’s all he wants. That’s all he wants. That’s what he’s looking for. And the devil is absolutely just taking over people’s lives and they have no idea what is driving them.

You know, Jesus gave a picture … I think one passage that tells about it is in Matthew chapter 12. I think we need to refresh our minds and understand some of these things. And we’ve got younger generations that weren’t here 45 years ago when the Lord really uncovered a lot of this stuff. And they don’t really understand. It isn’t just ‘the’ devil. He has an army. If God has an innumerable company of angels, he has an innumerable company of devils. And they are out to make a home in anybody who will yield.

In verse 43 of Matthew 12, Jesus is talking really on two levels here. One has to do with a generation but it also shows what happens on the individual level, too. It says, “When an evil spirit comes out of a man ….” So, to start with, he was in the man, wasn’t he? There was a possession there. There was a … it wasn’t just the man you were dealing with, you were dealing with a demon who also lived there, and who influenced that man.

“… It goes through arid …” or dry, “… places seeking rest and does not find it.” Now that reveals something about demons that their whole being is wrapped up in using and abusing and ultimately destroying humanity. They have no rest just being out there disembodied. Their nature cries out for expression. Whatever it is their nature to do, they cannot be satisfied unless they are doing it.

You get a picture of that with somebody that’s really, really hooked and wasted on drugs. Let’s just use that as an example. I remember when I was again in my student days, heroine was the big thing in New York. And people’s lives were absolutely taken over. Their whole lives were about getting that next fix. They would have a little short interlude of what they thought was bliss, where the pain was dulled, and they felt good. And then as soon as it wore off, they felt worse than they did before. And the only answer was another fix. And so they just were led like little sheep down this path of destruction. And everybody around them could see it, but all they could think about … oh God, I feel bad, I’ve got to feel good again. Just totally addicting.

You know sin in any form is addicting. It’s just a little more obvious with something like that. But you take a devil himself, you take a demon, that’s his nature! He absolutely is addicted to doing whatever it is that it’s his nature to do. And so, the only way he can really give expression to that is through human flesh. And so he will seek out somebody and begin to cultivate them, begin to inject and encourage, and whatever he’s got to do to work upon their minds.

You’ve got so many folks that think they’re born a certain way. You’ve got demons who are cultivating people to make a home in them. Let’s just get real about it. Let’s just tell the truth. You get a demon who’s got all kinds of wicked, perverse, whatever it is, stuff going on, and his nature, he’s gonna find somebody to express that through. He’s got to build a home. He can’t just walk in. He’s got to get your cooperation.

But the thing is, he blinds people to the real source. They think the thoughts are just arising out of them, their own brains, and guess what? Our culture is divorcing us from God. Doesn’t that all work out nice for him? All of a sudden, you are an evolved animal, evolved somehow magically from pond scum which somehow came from who knows what. Lord have mercy! I’ll tell you, people go down the road and the blindness is incredible.

But you’ve got somebody who thinks that they’re just an animal, and there is no accountability to anybody, and I have this desire, what could be wrong with my pursuing what I feel and what I want? There is a logic to that, isn’t there? You can see how the Devil has woven his lie and packaged it in such a way that it sounds totally reasonable!

But then again, of course, you’ve got some people who are homicidal maniacs. Well, they’re just damaged. You know, we’ve got to fix them, or put them away, or do something. Man, you could go in so many directions with some of this stuff. It’s just unbelievable what the devil has spawned in our world by this kind of philosophy.

You’ve got Hitler on the one hand who was trying to perfect the race by eliminating millions and millions of people he considered to be inferior. What was driving all of that? Evolutionism. He believed in atheistic evolutionism, that we’re gonna perfect the race. Communists have done the same thing. All these other philosophies that are … liberalism and progressivism, it all comes out of the same fountain. We’re gonna fix the race.

But I’ll tell you, we’ve got wicked spirits. And when they … and here’s what Jesus is getting at. He goes to an arid place. He doesn’t have a home right now. He’s homeless! And miserable! So what does he do? “Then it says, I will return to the house I left.” So he goes back. “When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.” See that was a picture of an individual who may be reformed and cleaned up a little bit on the outside, took on a little bit of religion. It was a picture of the nation of Israel that God had brought into a place of knowledge of some truth and blessing. But they never really came in touch with God, not as a nation. And this individual … Jesus never came in!

It’s not enough to get the devils out! If you’re not serving Jesus, if He is not resident Lord in your life, you are part of the kingdom of darkness. I don’t care how respectable you are in society.
